THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE
a journal entry by Kazuya Kamenashi

🎵 Listen While You Read 🎵

After the Eternal Summer, an era of unseen peace and prosperity for the Soul Society at large, the untimely and mysterious death of many high-ranking Central Forty-Six elders sent the Seireitei into disarray, and from the chaos arose a new order under auspices of the Tsunayashiro and the Shihōin. With many of the Kuchiki Great Noblility’s ranking members slain, and the Shiba weakened by their long and losing economic battle with the other nobles, the Tsunayashiro and the Shihōin took control of the Seireitei, left unopposed to do as they wished. The Central Forty-Six, predominantly composed of these two powerful Noble Houses, decreed to falsely try and imprison the acting Commander of the Gotei 13, Kin Yamasaki; her crime: the massacre of Central Forty-Six; her sentence: execution upon Sokyoku Hill. This infamous event forced the once mighty and thriving Soul Society into a downward spiral, and thus began The Great Degradation.

The year 1878 marked a drastic change in the Gotei 13’s outlook on the Soul Society, as the majority of the seats of Central Forty-Six were held by the privileged who cared little for the welfare of those who lived far behind the tall white walls of the Seireitei. A once thriving and symbiotic relationship between the two societies was flipped on its head, the effects of the Seireitei’s abandonment of the Rukongai felt immediately. Where once the exchange of goods and services fell under the prosperous channel of well-maintained networks of supply and trade, they were removed from the reach of those not of the highest Nobility and their retainers. To make matters worse, the Third Division’s Patrol units were downsized, the manpower instead used to serve those who lived within the Seireitei. In the eyes of the elite, it was as if the Rukongai and its denizens didn't exist.

A darkness befell the wandering city, starting from the outskirts in the farthest Districts, slowly spreading throughout like a contagious plague. With dwindling resources and negligence on the part of the Shinigami, crime rose, death becoming even more common than it already was. A severing distrust scarred the minds and hearts of the Soul Society, the short-sighted decision by those who ruled ensuring that a once relatively contained corruption grew like cancer. After a century, the innermost Districts, historically prosperous and nearly as safe as the Seireitei itself, also succumbed; once powerful Noble houses were reduced to beggars, stripped of dignity and honor, their high-potential children sold off to the highest bidders. A great unrest brewed for decades, criminal factions rising to strengths not seen for half a millenia, and garnering the people’s support, for the downtrodden grasped at even the faintest of hopes for a better life.

And within the Seireitei, an even thicker turmoil grew, a palpable disturbance within the Divisions of a once united military force. The recent mysterious murders of three Captains of the Gotei 13, Captain of the Third Division Ken Kure, Captain of the Seventh Division Minori Hara, and Captain of the Tenth Division Masaro Yasui, fueled an already raging fire, the tension rising to levels that eroded an already tenuous relationship between Squads. The untimely death of three Captains within the span of three months raised many concerns, none more pertinent than the question of who, or what, would be capable of killing not one, but three Captain-class Shinigami? Rumors of treason spread like wildfire, accusations against the Captain of the Eleventh, Kenpachi Murakami and his Division of blood-thirsty ghouls made at every corner of the gloomy Seireitei. No Captain went verbally unscathed, each and every one garnering some degree of suspicion, some even from within their own Divisions. And strangely, no traces were left at the scenes of the crimes, no bread crumbs to follow, the Operatives of the Stealth Force yet unable to sniff out the culprits.

The Central Forty-Six, and by extension, the First Division, continue to keep the Seireitei from imploding, and the inevitable at bay, but for how long? The pressure is at a fever-pitch, the tidings of disaster written all over the white walls of the Seireitei…

NO FLOWERS FOR THE GRAVES
(Shinigami Civil War)
Recapped via Narrator | (Narrator voiced by Toru Furuya)

🎵 Listen While You Read 🎵

The Great Degradation, a period in Soul Society history where the Shinigami had a strenuous relationship with the Rukongai itself that lasted for 130 years. This era of strife brought about the Four Noble houses, and the other nobles who followed them, seizing power and control over the Gotei Thirteen itself. After the Tsunayashiro and Shihoin clans orchestrated a massacre of the Kuchiki clan’s ranking members of Central Forty-Six things began to free fall for the Shinigami. With no enemies beyond their walls they turned inwards and began devouring themselves. This era was ripe with political scandals, assassinations, manipulation, and lies all perpetuated by the Shihoin and Tsunayashiro clans in their joint bid to seize absolute control of the Soul Society as a whole. The unrest from the Shinigami within the Seireitei and the unrest of the souls of the Rukongai eventually reached a boiling point and thus, the Civil War began.

Orchestrated killings began to pop up in various places throughout the Rukongai and even at the gates of the Seireitei themselves. Multiple reports of Hollow-like activity were running rampant, however, with the constant infighting of the Gotei Thirteen where the military couldn’t make a move without the nobilities saying so, these reports went unanswered. Civil unrest was at an all time high as the souls of Rukongai began to gather and riot at the four gates of the Seireitei, adding further strain on the Shinigami. Because of this both Tsunayashiro and Shihoin clans treated any report or tale of Hollow activity in the Rukongai as false, simply a ploy by the people of the Rukongai to send their military out on pointless missions. However, three unlikely Shinigami happened upon a scene where the Hollow activity was confirmed. One of these Shinigami was carrying out a massacre in the Rukongai, their reason for this is unknown while another was simply there following up on leads about this Hollow on their own. The third Shinigami appeared with the same thing in mind.

The massacre of the Rukongai citizens was blamed on this supposed Hollow and lucky enough for this criminal a Hollow did emerge, giving the group a brief fight before retreating. With the rumors confirmed to be true the trio split up, two returning to tell their Captains while a third went deeper into the Rukongai to seek out more information. The duo returned to find the Seireitei in the middle of a coup. Fights were igniting all over the Seireitei at this point, all while more invisible strings were being pulled by one of the Thirteen Captains. Many souls were lost during this brief war, majority of the Captains were killed in the ensuing violence, the Kenpachi at the time reveling in this chance to spread violence at will.

New revelations were made during this time, unbeknownst to the Shiba head her clan was being used by the Tsunayashiro and Shihoin behind her back to perpetuate violence in the Rukongai. Needless and pointless death spread by their hands. This only came to light when four Shinigami arrived seeking justice for these misdeeds only to learn that the head of the clan was ignorant of what was truly going on. The majority of the clan was devastated in the ensuing combat. As this was happening the Captain of Ninth Division, Hitoshi Shihaimono challenged the current Captain Commander, Hotaka Shihōin to battle. As their fight raged on the true puppet master of this entire debacle, Captain of Fifth Division, Sagishi Hashimoto, had entered the Muken to free one prisoner in particular, Kano, The Mother of Vizards.

Having been caught by a young detective and his two allies a brief scuffle within the Muken ensued, however the trio were not prepared for Captain Hashimoto’s Zanpakuto which slowed the actions of those around him. While the trio thought they were actively fighting him, they were actually standing perfectly still, their bodies lagging behind the actions their minds believed they were taking. When reality had caught up to them they were on the ground and the Mother of Vizards was freed. Her final act before leaving the Soul Society with Sagishi Hashimoto was turning the Trio into Vizards. Captain of the Thirteenth Division, Nakazawa, had arrived on the scene and was left alone to subdue the three newly born Vizards. After a grueling battle he emerged from the Muken, trapping one inside with Kido and beating the other two into submission. This cost him his life but the Captain died standing on his feet, with a smile on his face.

The coup managed to be a success as Hotaka Shihoin was defeated by Hitoshi Shihaimono. The Kenpachi, however, still raged on killing rampantly until confronted by the Lieutenant of the Third Division. The two battled hard and when it seemed like the Lieutenant was going to meet his end, he used his wisdom to his advantage and sent the Kenpachi hurtling into the Shakonmaku (遮魂膜, Soul-Warding Membrane; Viz "Soul Shield Membrane") killing him instantly.

Many lives were lost in this war, multiple Captains were killed creating a massive void in the Seireitei, but this paved the way for new souls to pick up the mantles of Captain. And thus a new generation had begun.

A SKY WITHOUT A SOUL
(The Shiba Incident)
Recapped via Narrator | (Narrator voiced by Toru Furuya)

🎵 Listen While You Read🎵

Ten Months had passed since the Civil War and the Gotei Thirteen was in a state of rebuilding. During those Ten Months new Captains had made their appearance. Third Division Captain and current Kenpachi Otokogi “Kenpachi” Aijō, Fourth Division Captain and only reformed Vizard Itaku Ōhei, Thirteenth Division Captain and former Lieutenant of First Division, Kasu Shinka, Captain of Second Division Kagi Senkō, and Captain of Fifth Division Shizukana Kurayami. These individuals were being led by the new Captain Commander, Hitoshi Shihaimono whose main priority was to reestablish peaceful connections with the Rukongai and undo all the damage caused by the nobility of the Soul Society.

The political landscape for nobility had changed forever, no longer would anyone risk dealing with them, be it above or underground connections. Their power in the Soul Society had been shattered and their authority greatly diminished. With the Kuchiki dwindled to a handful and the Shiba clan being in the same state the Four Great Houses could no longer unite as they could before and due to past massacres and manipulation the chances of a true unity between them is distant history. However, with them out of the picture the Soul Society can finally begin healing, but not before taking one more scar to remind everyone that the sins of the past always come back to haunt them.

Densagi Shiba, new Lieutenant of Fifth Division, was out on an excursion in Hueco Mundo when the Civil War took place. Use of the Senkaimon was barred and restricted during the war so neither side could pull in reinforcements. Upon his return he learned of his Clan’s fate from his sister, Choko Shiba. Grappling with what had happened, it took him much time to gather himself and eventually confront the culprit of the slaughter, Otokogi. The confrontation started off fairly civil, as civil as one can be confronting the killer of his family. Tempers were flaring and so too was Reiatsu from both parties. Densagi raised his Reiatsu in hostility and anger and Otokogi raised his in defense of that to maintain a line of dialogue with the man he once called friend during the Unhallowed War. But this situation would boil over in the worst way.

Captain Senkō arrived on the scene, as captain of Second Division he made it his business to figure out what was going on and why these two were raising their Reiatsu at a dangerous pace. Captain Kurayami arrived next, interjecting with her Reiatsu and using its calming effect to pacify Densagi. The attempt to sooth the rage of Densagi only served to anger him further, sensing the threat building in a bad direction Captain Senkō used his Bankai to get the edge in a potential fight. Otokogi, the man in the middle, tried to stop both sides, however Densagi saw this as the three Captains ganging up on him. This resulted in him using Bankai which would lead to the further devastation of the Northwest quadrant of the Seireitei…

Elsewhere in the Human World…

Division Ten had encountered a rather strange Arrancar that refused to give his name. The Arrancar challenged them to a friendly fight, wanting to test and see if they could protect “his city” from the gathering forces in Hueco Mundo. While things were cordial in Naruki City the same could not be said for Karakura Town. Multiple Kumon had shown up all over the skies and yet no Hollows were coming from them. Due to the sheer amount of Kumon, the new Captain of Thirteenth Division, Kasu Shinka, was deployed to respond to the threat. In the shadows an Arrancar watched from the ground level as the Captain evaluated the scene, reporting back directly what she was seeing. She immediately activated Bankai in hopes of drawing out any Hollows or Arrancar but she would be met with none.

Back in Naruki City, the Tenth Division had their work cut out for them against this Arrancar and by the end of it he called off the fight. He opted to leave peacefully and gave them a message to pass along to the rest of Soul Society. Something strange is going on in Hueco Mundo and he isn’t sure what it is but he’ll let them know more once he finds out. It was strange for an Arrancar to be so peaceful and willing to give information out. Was it a ploy or was it the truth? Only time would tell…

Back in Soul Society…

Densagi’s Bankai was growing in strength, the parasitic lightning of his Bankai struck down random Shinigami across the Northwest. To staunch the deaths of so many Shinigami, Otokogi took charge, using his own Bankai to slow down Densagi’s while ordering the two new Captains, Kagi and Shizukana, to evacuate as many people as they could. Things were bad and the old man knew it, bit by bit, Densagi’s Bankai was over powering him purely due to the fact that the parasitic lightning was gaining strength and soon it would over take him. After an inner conflict with himself and his own Zanpakuto the old man knew what he had to do. To continue fighting would only further enrage Densagi and bring about more deaths and so, to save everyone else he sacrificed himself. A thunderous bolt of lightning struck the old man, obliterating him and leaving nothing behind but a smoldering Zanpakuto.

Otokogi was not the only Captain to die that day as the Captain Commander himself met a similar fate. After gaining approval from the newly reformed Central Forty Six he was allowed to go to Muken in search of a man to recruit. It is unknown who this man was but he was strong enough to kill the Commander without a Zanpakuto and fled Muken. This man would break into Second Division and reacquire his Zanpakuto there and flee into the Rukongai.

By the end of the day Densagi, who by all rights is now the new Kenpachi, was imprisoned in the Muken. His rage quelled, he accepted the sentence without a fuss, although it is unknown if through all his rage if he saw his old friend giving in at the end.

VISION IS A HOLLOW END
(The Arrancar Invasion)
Recapped via Narrator | (Narrator voiced by Toru Furuya)

🎵 Listen While You Read 🎵

A year and a half of time passes by in the blink of an eye for Souls who can live for hundreds of years and much happened under the nose of the Shinigami during this time. Their old nemesis, the Arrancar, were gaining strength while they were focused on licking their wounds and gathering their strength from not only the Civil War but the Shiba Incident as well. While tempers continued to flare in the Seireitei, a new God Queen emerged and began making her moves, recruiting powerful Arrancar and Hollow alike for her cause, revenge for Esmeralda. The tension within the Seireitei is broken as news of Arrancar in both Naruki and Karakura rings out, forcing them to drop their petty squabbles and turn their attention to the true enemy. The Arrancar caused damage to both Naruki and Karakura and by the time the Shinigami had arrived many human souls had already been lost.

The Arrancar briefly engaged with the Shinigami, testing their level of power against their own without fully revealing their ace, the Soul King Fragments that were secretly enhancing their strength. While the Arrancar in Karakura were pulled out empty handed the ones in Naruki managed to kidnap two Fullbringers. However, due to the method of capture and conflicting powers the two Fullbringers were dropped off in some remote location of Hueco Mundo. When all was said and done this was chalked up as a loss for the Shinigami as much damage had been done in both locations along with the loss of many human souls, this was foreshadowing for what was to happen a few days later in the Seireitei itself.

After being placed on high alert all members of the Gotei Thirteen were to be ready for an invasion at any moment, with a few Shinigami actually making the rounds to ensure everyone was truly ready. The sad reality is, they were not ready. The Espada attacked like a sudden storm from the heavens, decimating the Kido Corps and Academy in one fell swoop. The Thirteenth Division was not spared from this blitzkrieg as it lost both a seated member and their Captain on the initial attack from the Espada, Cordelia. The Gran Rey Cero she unleashed ripped through the barracks taking the lives of Keniro Senko and Captain Kasu Shinka in the process.

Elsewhere, to the southeast, the Espada Grimaldi had devastated the Academy and Kido Corps. There was no Captain present to staunch his flood of destruction and an unlikely ally had arrived to go toe-to-toe with him, an unaligned Arrancar known as Estarossa, someone the Tenth Division had met with before. During his exchange with Grimaldi reinforcements arrived in the form of the Fifth Division Captain Shizukana Kurayami. There wasn’t much left to save but there was plenty left to avenge.

Back in the Northwest, between the Fifth and Tenth Division Barracks another Espada, Ximena had appeared but quickly encountered Lieutenant Oyuki Gekka of Fifth Division. The Espada wasted no time using their Resurrección to stand off against Oyuki’s constant release Bankai. Over time the Third Seat of the Eighth Division, Hideo Shihoin and Third seat of Thirteenth Division Tomi Yume had arrived on the scene and observed the battle briefly before jumping in to aid the Lieutenant. Within the Tenth Division the Arrancar arrived and wasted no time laying waste to her surroundings. Emillia, the Cuatro Espada started by devastating Tenth Division Barracks followed by destroying the sole survivor of the Shiba clan in her Manor without realizing it.

As the battles raged on, a trio of Arrancar lingered in the Central Seireitei amongst the First Division Barracks specifically. The God Queen, Valiosa, the Cero Espada, Antonio Todopoderoso, and a third unknown Arrancar. They had picked this location as a statement of their power, to stand in the capital of the Seireitei and treat it like their temporary throne. Valiosa would use her Resurrección, transforming into a giant cocoon and enveloping many of the buildings in First Division Barracks along with it. She fed upon their bodies and Reiryoku as Antonio stood guard over her, he then sent the unknown Arrancar off to face off against other Shinigami, to keep them occupied. This Arrancar, known as Gallieno possessed the second strongest Soul King Fragment, the Heart of the Soul King. He arrived at the Ninth Division Barracks, openly requesting battle against its Captain, who didn’t exist. A testament to the lack of knowledge the Arrancar had on the Seireitei.

Captain of the Second Division, Kagi Senko along with his Lieutenant Kinko Kuchiki and Third Seat Nairaishi Izo were confronted by a rather relaxed Espada by the name of Cazador. Their battle consisted of much talking and deceptiveness which unfortunately led to the three Shinigami being incapacitated by the lone Espada. Even in this state the trio continued to fight until receiving aid from Captain of the Tenth Division Jushiro Izanagi and his unseated member Kuwashii Hakunetsu.

It was revealed that the Arrancar had Soul King Fragments, the knowledge was made public during the invasion and not before. Central Forty-Six decided to withhold that information until the last minute out of fear of backlash. As it stood, Grimaldi had the Soul Chain of the Soul King, Cazador with the Blood of the Soul King Cordelia had the Legs of the Soul King, Ximena had the Lungs of the Soul King, Emillia had the Spine of the Soul King, Gallieno had the Heart of the Soul King, while Antonio and Valiosa had the Left and Right eye of the Soul King, respectively.

Michiya Senko, of the Twelfth Division concocted a plan to disrupt the compatibility between the Espada and their Fragments, giving the Shinigami an opening to fight back against those who had been making frequent use of their Fragments. The first Espada to fall was Ximena at the hands of Oyuki, Hideo, and Tomi. Next was Grimaldi who had a strange soul fragmentation happen before Shizukana, Estarossa and the Dean of the Academy, Yuichiro Shihoin who had joined the fray. Part of Grimaldi fled back to Hueco Mundo with the Soul King Chain leaving his depowered fragment behind to be melted away by the Neurotoxin Rain of Shizukana’s Bankai.

Cordelia was routed by the barbaric attack of the Captain of Eleventh Division, Taro Date. She fled back to Las Noches via Negación. Meanwhile Emillia had fled upon sensing Estarossa’s presence within the Soul Society, revealing herself to be a turncoat amidst the ranks of the Espada. But this was not the only Turn coat to be revealed on this horrific day. Elk, a member of the Kido Corps, slipped away mostly unannounced, but not before sending forth a massive forbidden spell towards the cocoon in First Division. Antonio made short work of the spell redirecting it towards the area Estarossa occupied. Luckily he and his group were saved by Emillia, pulling them into a Garganta to save them from the devastating explosion that followed.

During his time of guarding Valiosa, Antonio encountered Hideo Shihoin who began battling against him. During the fight Antonio used Resurrección and revealed not only his true power but the power of the Left eye of the Soul King. After destroying part of Hideo’s Bankai and his arms the Shinigami was rescued by Suzume. Shinigami began to gather in the First Division as Yuichiro engaged Antonio in battle. This engagement was short lived as Valiosa emerged from the Cocoon in her Segunda Etapa. To call the fight against Valiosa a battle would do it an injustice to the definition of battle as the God Queen was merely playing with her food and her new power of The Almighty, once Antonio handed over the other eye to her to fully unlock it.

Yuichiro was slowly joined by more Shinigami, trying to organize an unified assault against the God Queen as he honed in on the weakness of her Almighty. Plans were being organized amidst the myriad of attacks Valiosa was doling out to the gathered Shinigami. In an attempt to slay her the Sōkyoku was put to use as it was set up and ready to be deployed in the event any of the Arrancar needed a relic on par with a Soul King Fragment. Valiosa became its target but due to her future sight she sent it hurdling into the Shakonmaku (遮魂膜, Soul-Warding Membrane; Viz "Soul Shield Membrane"), vaporizing it instantly.

With their ace in the hole gone and Valiosa having had her fill of fun she began to charge a Cero that would have decimated all of the Central Seireitei until something odd happened. She began screaming, truly horrified and panicked by something no one else could see. In that terror she fled, taking Antonio, Cazador and Gallieno with her back to Las Noches via Negación. While the Shinigami took stock of the damage, lives lost and injuries, something strange took place in Hueco Mundo. The arrival of a new faction emerged to confront Valiosa and her remaining Espada. They called themselves Quincy and their leader Adonai displayed the power to turn Arrancar back into humans, or more specifically turn them into Quincy.

This was first done to Cordelia who was then sent into a murky Shadow. Gallieno charged Adonai and had the Soul King’s Heart ripped from his body, no miracle arrived to save him. Next, Cazador was beheaded as he took interest in how Adonai turned an Arrancar into a human, essentially "resurrecting" the dead. The last person to be converted into a Quincy was Valiosa after Antonio was sent flying down a long hall due to an arrow shot by Adonai. Antonio was too late to save his sister as she had been converted and sent away. He rallied those who remained in Las Noches only to be met with the full might of the Quincy. Many Arrancar were shot down as Antonio made his escape into
the sands of Hueco Mundo.
