”No sir, Otokogi-sensei, far from it sir. I had only come into town this morning, I’ve only just met up with Goseikanjo-dono here within the last half-hour or so sir!”

At this point Otokogi begins stroking his beard, this was suspicious indeed. There is no reason for Lieutenant Goseikanjo to fabricate a lie about herself if she were the one to send out the report. Such a lie could land her in trouble for killing Rukongai Citizens in mass without proper clearance, such things can be approved if the balance of souls tips too far in one direction. Shin’eki continues with his debrief, while most would have halted the young Shinigami from speaking so much, Otokogi welcomed it as it gave him a clearer picture of what was happening here.

”The thought of sending out word of what just occurred had only just now crossed my mind, and of course I can’t send anything with my phone now since it got rusted when that damn hollow arrived. Which is why I was just asking if she could send out pictures via the Denreishiki so we could have a first person glance to provide the higher ups. But we’ve failed to do so at this time sir!”

He nods, showing that he understands his frustration and just as he suspected it was a Hollow that was lingering around the area and it is most likely responsible for those impaled on the trees. Hollow attacks, albeit rare in Soul Society, tend to happen in the outer districts as it is the furthest away from the Seireitei. The thought of one happening this close to the Seireitei is absurd and for it to merely kill and not devour these people is also strange behavior as well. Killing for sport and not for food does not fit the M.O. of a normal Hollow. Shin’eki continues his debrief while the old Lieutenant contemplates all he is hearing.

”When I arrived into the forest, I was tracking a group of bandits which led me to this place here. Approximately where I stand now, stood a hollow of which I had never seen before, not even during my deployments to Hueco Mundo. It was then that I jumped into the fray in an attempt to protect these men from said hollow. In my efforts, unbeknownst to me at the time, Gosei-dono leaped in to save them from the hollow while I was prepared to engage with the beast head-on. However, it summoned a garganta and escaped without a trace, and now we have 3 corpses, and a shell of a mad-man tied to a tree, because they seemed to have had connections and knowledge of this hollow, but because we had captured them and began to interrogate them, they bit into, what we can only assume as cyanide tablets, and keeled over as opposed to the mad man, of which broke under the weight of responsibility, and of whom we were just discussing of what we need/should do with him, as Hachiko-dono brought up that other anti-seireitei sympathizers may show up to discard the bodies.”

Bit by bit this was sounding more and more like a plot happening from within, a Hollow that a Fourth Seat of Fifth Division has never seen before coupled with the men choosing death over interrogation. Death was the preferable option for them as if they told who was behind all this they would receive a fate worse than death. He sighs as the pieces of this elaborate puzzle come together but still there is not enough to even craft a proper picture. As the Fourth Seat approaches him to hand him the tablet he shakes his head at him.

”I do not know what to do with that Uemura-san, it's best not to pass around evidence like that, especially to a third party who just arrived on the scene. Remain wary of these things especially when the situation is still a mystery.”

For all Shin’eki knew Otokogi was behind all of this, stepping so close to him carelessly with evidence in hand only made himself open to receive an attack. The elder thinks like this constantly as it can be a lesson he can pass on to the next class. The more the three linger together the more he feels as if a fourth party would be arriving soon to pin the blame of all this on them. Otokogi keeps his senses attuned for any approaching souls along with any who may be lingering and watching in the area. While doing this Lieutenant Goseikanjo begins speaking
on what she experienced while out in this seemingly random Rukongai District.

"Uemura is correct, the plan was to send photographic evidence of these occurrences to the proper authorities but you arrived just before things had slowed down long enough for us to leap into action. As for me, Well, I was instructed by my Captain that I had been given permission to do whatever was necessary to investigate rumors of hollow activity within the forty eighth district of the Rukongai and I came upon a village that insisted on being dishonest with me during my interrogation. They were very persistent liars and their fictional tales did not waver until I confronted the last remaining woman and child. After dispatching their traitorous husband and father in front of them, and threatening the bodily harm of her son, the woman told me what I needed to know and so I let them keep their lives. Liars and cheaters deserve no mercy, surely you agree. Those two were the only honest souls in the bunch, such a pity.”

Hachiko watches the elder, expecting him to fall into some sort of inner turmoil over what he was just told. What turmoil could he possibly experience over this? He is too old to lash out in anger over such information, perhaps in his younger days he would have lashed out, maybe even attacked her. He isn’t angry, no, he is just disappointed and it can be seen on his face as he gives her a sorrowful expression.

”Liars and cheaters they may be but it does not make their lives forfeit. He was doing what he could to protect what was important to him, no different than we Shinigami. Wielding a weapon and power does not give you the right to cast violent judgment upon someone else. Lieutenant Goseikanjo, if you were in his position, a position of helplessness against a being vastly stronger than you in ways you cannot imagine, what would you have done? Anything possible to survive and for you, one with power, that may mean fighting tooth and nail but for him, with a wife and child, his version of fighting was to lie and cheat. Such things buy many in the Rukongai another day's breath. We have Citizens at our gates rioting and upset with us, Goseikanjo-san, taking the life of a father and husband will only upset these people even more. Treat them fairly and justly, treat them like people. If I hear about such a thing again I’ll report it to your Captain or Central Forty-Six.”

She may have her justifications for what she did but it did not make Otokogi hesitate in giving her a stern talking to. He knows what it is like to live in the Rukongai, what it is like to feel powerless and oppressed by those stronger than him and by Shinigami who take things too far. It is something he sees all too often and it is something he tries to put a stop to, but one man alone cannot make a change that significant.

“These were also on the dead ones. I know this currency and it doesn’t circulate through these parts of the soul society, In fact, I’d be comfortable saying that they don’t naturally leave the Seireitei. Alas, I cannot take credit for this masterpiece and is Whoever is behind this…”

Now this was a welcoming surprise, more pieces fell into place, the picture painting itself to resemble that of a Shinigami, one with wealth and some modicum of influence to deal out this currency and at the same time also naive. No, not naive, if someone from within is doing this why would they allow Otokogi to know about this situation knowing he would figure out where the currency came from. His brow now begins to furrow as he begins to scan the forest not with just his Reikaku but his eyes as well.

"I’m willing to bet that they’re of imperial stature and with the involvement of a hollowfied soul completely on the loose like this, they’re amongst our own using desperate low born goons to attempt to throw us off of their trail. In short, I hypothesize that at least one of the the culprits is a shinigami working in the circles of troublesome noble extremists. Perhaps you can tell who crafted this poison. I wonder, in all of your centuries, if you have ever come across anything like it before?"

”No, I know nothing about poisons sadly, the most I can do is point you to one of our divisions to analyze it; however it may be better to find someone you know and trust to analyze it.”

He responds quickly as he looks around the forest more, his left arm still relaxed on his blade as his right arm hangs at his side. Was it a mere coincidence these three met up all on the pretense of misinformation? No, this reeks of something more pungent than any Hollow, this reeks of a set up or trap.

”Could both of you humor me for a moment? A scenario of sorts is what I want to lay out, keep your guards up and your wits about you as I explain. Someone, our mystery traitor, gave orders to their pet Hollow and precise directions to attack this district. This same pet could have possibly killed the Western Gate Guard as well. With the bulk of the investigative force at that gate they lure in a few folks to take the fall, that being us. The Hollow murders the villagers in this area, it draws people out to investigate due to rumors of Hollow activity, Lieutenant Goseikanjo and Fourth Seat Uemura. Then, for some unknown reason, a report makes its way across my desk saying that that very same Lieutenant has massacred a village and that the Fourth Seat was seen along with her, phrased as if he were an accomplice.”

His feet shift along the ground as he turns to continue looking around the area, given his tone it was clear he was not finished speaking.

”Naturally, that draws me out to this location as well, almost as if knowing that I would personally investigate this jarring report. Now, all three of us are out in this forest, surrounded by dead Rukongai citizens killed in brutal ways with every other citizen possibly being paid off to lie and say we were responsible for it. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone coincidentally showed up ready to arrest us on false information, or rather arrest us to keep their own name clear. Whoever it is knows us, knows how we may react to certain information as well as our positions in the Gotei. The young impressionable Fourth Seat will surely follow any orders given to him by someone of higher rank, and the Lieutenant will listen to only their Captain or maybe even someone else they hold in high regard. This is how they will paint the story.”

Otokogi sat idly by while the previous commander was put to death wrongfully, Perhaps his blade could have done something that day or maybe it would have just framed him as a traitor as well. This is why the thought of speaking his next words brings an enormous weight upon his shoulders.

”You two are young and have a long career ahead of you. Should it come down to it, should my scenario come to pass I will choose the route of violence and reveal the truth in my own way. Should that happen, do not follow my example, flee or surrender.”

While he speaks as if these things will happen within the next few minutes, they could happen within the next few days or even hours after they return to the Seireitei. This information needs to get out and circulated, people need to become aware of what is happening one way or another.

”I suggest we all return to the Seireitei and report on our findings here. That man who refused to take his own life, do either of you know of a place where you can keep him restrained, preferably outside of the Seireitei? The last thing we need is our only source of information mysteriously dying in his cell.”

”I do not know what to do with that Uemura-san, it's best not to pass around evidence like that, especially to a third party who just arrived on the scene. Remain wary of these things especially when the situation is still a mystery.”

As Aijō-sensei finished his statement, Shin would find himself completely dumbfounded. His reasoning was truly logical, and despite Shin’eki’s self assuredness in Otokogi’s good faith, and public appearance, one could not forget that at this point, everyone and anyone could be an enemy. Especially those who otherwise professed an all-around upstanding persona. With this newly adopted revelation, Shin would place the tablet back within his Shihakusho's pocket with a nod. Even though he felt it was in his best interest to hand off the item into the hands of someone he had the utmost trust in, especially since him possessing anything on his person could prove to be a liability when faced with the first sign of danger, the 4th Seated Officer understood the potential dangers of delivering any shred of evidence into the wrong hands. Shin would turn his attention to the Sanguine Lieutenant, as her voice began to carry through the air.
Liars and cheaters deserve no mercy, surely you agree. Those two were the only honest souls in the bunch, such a pity.”

As Hachiko's primary mistake was relaying this information in the first place, her secondary mistake was focusing her attention on Otokogi-sensei, and her third and final mistake was expecting either of the other Shinigami to not be phased by her cruel judgement she had recklessly carried out upon the lives of the Rukon District Citizens, the very souls they were tasked with protecting from Hollows. Shin'eki's hand reflexively drew toward his zanpakuto's tsuka. His knuckles burned white as the heat he generated within his grasp began to envelope his entire being. The boy's heart raced within his chest. His vision became red. The very second Shin'eki attempted to make a move, the soft, yet stern words from Otokogi pierced Shin's eardrums, bringing him back to reality, if only but for a moment, as he spoke:

”Liars and cheaters they may be but it does not make their lives forfeit. He was doing what he could to protect what was important to him, no different than we Shinigami. Wielding a weapon and power does not give you the right to cast violent judgment upon someone else. Lieutenant Goseikanjo, if you were in his position, a position of helplessness against a being vastly stronger than you in ways you cannot imagine, what would you have done? Anything possible to survive and for you, one with power, that may mean fighting tooth and nail but for him, with a wife and child, his version of fighting was to lie and cheat. Treat them fairly and justly, treat them like people. If I hear about such a thing again I’ll report it to your Captain or Central Forty-Six.”

A wave of calmness enveloped the boy. His grip upon his zanpakuto lessening with each passing word. It was, after all, this mentality that both Otokogi and Shin'eki shared, however back then this philosophy stood as a testimate for Shin'eki to grow stronger on the front lines. Now, upon seeing the events that had devolved from his time away in Hueco Mundo on the home front, it was clear now that perhaps a change in command was in order, at least for the time. However, such pleasantries would have to wait as the pending situation they continued to find themselves in continued to stump even the most methodical. This situation they had been put in was carefully, meticulously crafted.
Then, for some unknown reason, a report makes its way across my desk saying that that very same Lieutenant has massacred a village and that the Fourth Seat was seen along with her, phrased as if he were an accomplice. -- ”Naturally, that draws me out to this location as well, almost as if knowing that I would personally investigate this jarring report. This is how they will paint the story.”

Shin'eki would nod, taking in everything as he stood, his posture taking on a pensive stance as he'd look to Hachiko, To see if she had begun taking pictures and sending out word as he had previously suggested to her. Yes, they needed to move, and simultaneously get the word out, however, it seemed as though what Otokogi was saying became more and more likely as to what was going on. They were definately in the realm of being framed, however one thing stood out in Shin's mind than any other. Why would these citizens, who were clearly against the thought of Shinigami, and especially one such as him, who had been arguably disgustingly sweet in the eyes of some, why would they work for one, even under the guise of a coup.

”You two are young and have a long career ahead of you. Should it come down to it, should my scenario come to pass I will choose the route of violence and reveal the truth in my own way. Should that happen, do not follow my example, flee or surrender. I suggest we all return to the Seireitei and report on our findings here. That man who refused to take his own life, do either of you know of a place where you can keep him restrained, preferably outside of the Seireitei? The last thing we need is our only source of information mysteriously dying in his cell.”

"Sensei, don't think so lowly of us that we'd simply allow one of our own to fend for himself, even if it meant our own freedom and safety. Until the evil is uprooted within not only the Rukongai, but also within the very walls of Seireitei itself, such virtues as martyrdom and sacrifice will unfortunately go perversed, or worse-case scenario, underminded and forgotten. I also think, and this is just a hypothesis here. But during my time here in Semariyami, one thing has become unmistakable and painfully clear, these citizens have no respect or adoration for Shinigami. Clearly a result from the years of abuse they've had to endure, much akin to Hachiko-dono's outburst. However, I don't think the denizens of Rukongai, or at the very least, of Semariyari, would willingly side with someone who bore any fragment, or remote connection to a shihakusho. Basically, what I'm trying to say here, is I believe our culprit. Our mastermind, as it were, is either a member of a noble house, and/or a member of Central 46 itself..."

The words that escaped Shin's lips held enough weight that anyone who dared even think such things within specific company was warrant of treason, let alone death. However, this revelation had to prove fruitful in terms of direction, after all today's experiences cemented that logic in Shin's mind. Shin'eki would begin walking toward the groups only living clue, his crimson hair blowing in the wind, as a gust ruffled the trees, sending any loose foliage to the ground below. Reaching down toward the witness, Shin'eki's lavender orbs would shift toward Hachiko, as he began to whisper, his initial sentance went murmured, hoping to be out of earshot of Otokogi-sensei.

"*I'll have you repent to that family once we're done here.* Otokogi-sensei, Hachiko-dono. I'll carry the witness to where ever we decide to go, my choice would be to drop him off with my close acquantances in Sakahone. Though I'm open to any and all suggestions, *OUTSIDE* of killing him."

Shin'eki's gaze would return to the Sanguine Vice Captain, his gaze piercing into her golden orbs.
If Hachiko, and Otokogi had no further objections, Shin'eki would grab the man by the back of his ragged kamon. Shin'eki's unorthodox strength would be on display as he hauled the man's entire figure over his shoulder with a single hand.

By three they came together, and by three they sought answers. An older Soul, tried and tested, wise beyond even his years, approached the matter methodically. A younger Soul than he, troubled by fate and prophesied to bring calamity, approached the matter diabolically. And finally, the youngest of the three, a righteous and moral Soul, approached the matter empathetically.

As they continued to test the murky waters they all stood in, the Vice-Captain of the Fourth’s Denreishinki rang. If she were to pick it up and listen, she’d hear the voice of one of her many seated officers.

“Ma’am, I’ve word from the Captain that the Ninth’s Western Gate Guardian has been found dead this morning. The Captain has sent a forensics unit to the Ninth to help with the investigation. That is all the information we have currently, I’ll keep you updated.”

The longer that the educator spoke, Ko could feel the fire of anticipation fade from her eyes and her gratified smirk dissipate right along with it. In the past, Hachiko had made it a habit to present her teacher with various morbid accomplishments unceremoniously as well as abruptly for she had always held out hope that one day she might cross a line and earn an eruption of some sort out of the old man. It seemed that although centuries of time had passed since she’d set foot in his classroom, he would react the same way as he always had and sucked the buzz right out of her fun. In the pecking order they were at the same level so why did it still feel as if she was back in school taking a well deserved scolding? Lieutenant Goseikanjo looked away once she was sure that she wouldn’t be getting what she wanted out of the third’s Vice-Captain. Regardless, Ko concluded that inciting more conflict by getting into a debate about the value of traitor’s lives would only worsen their situation.

Right now there were more pressing matters to focus on such as the fact that enemies could have been lurking around every corner and as much as she didn’t want to come to terms with it, by discovering this scene they had probably made themselves targets.

‘Buzz Kill…’

Still, there was more than one way to get what she desired. As luck would have it, her action of broadcasting her dirty deed to the both of them had visibly garnered the type of feedback she’d been seeking and predictably, it ended up being the one of the two that she was really interested in. At this point, her golden eyes were leering at him as if they beckoned the boy to come at her. Before the geezer’s heartfelt speech, he had gone for his Zanpakuto and his rage translated into the heated expression of his Reiryoku. He was poised to strike one moment with his heart rate spiking but the more that Otokogi preached about peace and morality, his vitals balanced out. It was delightful to watch how what she said and did affected the fourth seat, even if every fluctuation wasn’t intense it was valuable data in any case.

Dutifully, Uemura hung on his elder’s every word but now and again Shin’eki’s wandering eyes took him to the sight of Hachiko who had indeed taken her Denreishiki out of her pocket in order to begin photographically documenting the evidence they had discovered up until now.

”You two are young and have a long career ahead of you. Should it come down to it, should my scenario come to pass I will choose the route of violence and reveal the truth in my own way. Should that happen, do not follow my example, flee or surrender. I suggest we all return to the Seireitei and report on our findings here. Their eyes met and the tension that had built up between them since her confession swelled furiously. In that moment, lavender clashed with orange and that was when she made the first of many moves. Hachiko took a few earnest strides to close the distance between them so that she could take a picture of the poison tablet still in Shin'eki's possession though it may have felt as if she was initiating some form of a daring attack at the rate she approached him. Since the start, he had served Hachiko as an object of her innate curiosity. That was what he had been to the surgeon, a source of amusement in her otherwise dull world. Deemed a subject, He didn’t act like the masses did and like she did with indifference towards the fates of the citizens of the Soul Society. He showed kindness, empathy and moral outrage to the point that he chose to risk his very life with his next words. In the short span of time that they had made their acquaintance, she wondered when she had given him the impression that he was in any sort of position to demand anything of her because she was just as much as his superior as the old man was. Perhaps it was the overexposure of blood soaked devastation making him fool hardy enough to have the audacity to play with something resembling a threat in his barely audible voice.

*I'll have you repent to that family once we're done here.*
Otokogi-sensei, Hachiko-dono. I'll carry the witness to where ever we decide to go, my choice would be to drop him off with my close acquantances in Sakahone. Though I'm open to any and all suggestions, *OUTSIDE* of killing him."

“Yes, I agree what happened to those people was….unfortunate. Poor souls. However, above all else, I can honestly say with all of my soul that…”

Just who did he believe he had stumbled upon in the shadows of this dark forest? Her appearance and knack for suppressing her actual reserves of overbearing spiritual power made appearing innocuous rather easy, unless they experienced her personal involvement in the trials of the past they could not have comprehended that the petite ruby-haired shinigami once marched as a seasoned war torn soldier in the legion of Soul Reapers cast against the forces of Hueco Mundo and had gone on to become an integral part of the resulting victory. He lifted his defiant head toward her as if she was not the woman who would have put him into the ground had she been a hair less intrigued by him. Mustering strength in her voice, a portion of her nauseating killer's intent flashed forth intending to paint that picture very clear for the bold officer.

“I am REMORSELESS.~”

The small pale hands working in tandem with the doctor’s Shunpo now held onto that same toxic tablet having snatched it from a disgruntled Shin’eki when he passed by her to gather up their prisoner. Realizing it was gone would have been too late, realizing it had happened at all much less doing anything about it until it had would have been an unlikely feat against the odds of the surgeon’s agility. Turning back to look at her would afford them both a different vision entirely with the lady’s single pony tail having split into two curled ones and her glasses were nowhere to be found. Ha reopened her golden eyes and immediately summoned an unsettling vibe with her awakening. Before, her posture had been stoic but now she almost bounced around on the tips of her toes in the way that a child might with too much energy. Once she had shared the coins with Otokogi and secured the capsule for further analysis either by her own Captain or by utilizing lasting ties from her time in the twelfth division, Hachiko’s phone unleashed its familiar chime. Allowing Uemura to reflect on the bad decision he had nearly made by using her ability to take something as vital as the pill off of him without so much as an opportunity to stop her as an example, she answered the phone call.

“Ma’am, I’ve word from the Captain that the Ninth’s Western Gate Guardian has been found dead this morning. The Captain has sent a forensics unit to the Ninth to help with the investigation. That is all the information we have currently, I’ll keep you updated.”

With a click of a button, she sent the gallery of images to her Captain since she was the only person that the doctor currently trusted in light of the theories the trio had spun. Relaying this particular information to Lieutenant Aijo and fourth seat Uemura had occurred to Hachiko but Otokogi’s earlier words cautioning them to be wary of all people stopped her. She told herself that if the situation was dire enough then they would eventually receive the same notification so there was no point in being the one who complicated the already convoluted circumstances surrounding them. Going to the site of the other murder was what this update would have had her doing and so she intended to do the opposite.

Her conversation presented Shin’eki with a dilemma. Was she distracted enough for him to retaliate against her or was this the cat dangling the cheese in front of the mouse? Showing him just how far apart in skill and speed that they actually were and tempting him to test her hypothesis and see if what she presumed was true. This would have led to a glorious battle but sadly, with Ha in control of the triplets the doctor’s inquiries would have to wait while the exile had her maniacal fun.

“I do have regrets~ I lament that they died so quickly. I wish they had been stronger so that they would have lasted longer and I could have killed them slower!”

Every word intended to hurt him and anger him but it was also her way of rubbing what she had done in his face, especially since he made it clear that she had crossed a proverbial line in the sand so to speak. Good. Everything was working according to her plan but if Ha was not careful, her crazed tenacity would cause her to forget about her agenda and cause her to stumble in the long run.

‘Hit me up when you wanna meet up! <3’

Vanishing, Leutenant Goseikanjo Shunpo’d away and left two traces of her behind as she'd completely supressed her Reiryoku for the trip and the foreseeable future. The signs were her eerie disembodied voice and a scrap of paper with her phone number etched onto it along with a scribbled heart and a message scratched haphazardly into the back of it.

“I’m taking this back to see if I can find out who made it and where it came from!~ Keep me posted guys!~”

The tension between the two Shinigami in the forest with him was very apparent, although he could understand why. The young Fourth Seat was unaccustomed to Lieutenant Goseikanjo’s “antics” and so they struck a much deeper cord for him. The old man let it wash over him as it always had because if she were truly an issue she would have been locked up or killed a long time ago. Seeing her here as his equal in rank tells him that she has worked hard, earned respect, and is good at what she does to hold such a station, despite her bizarre nature. Meanwhile Shin’eki deduces that their culprit may be that of a noble or someone from Central Forty-six and given the state of C46 it makes it all the more likely that the person is a noble who holds a seat. *Tch* that is the only sound the old man makes when the thought of nobility crosses his mind, it is their fault the Rukongai is in shambles, their greed and corruption turned his former Captain into a terrible man and through their will he may have been murdered as well. He goes into deep thought as Hachiko makes her move towards Shin’eki, the elder makes no motion to get involved as he was placing trust in his former student not to attack the boy and in turn for the boy not to attack her despite the hostile nature of her movements.

He strokes his beard, still in deep contemplation about this situation as a whole, they have nothing but theories to go off of, the evidence points at no specific person, and with so many nobles being corrupt it will be hard to narrow anything down. Furthermore, their strange Hollow is the most intriguing of all, its actions read as someone following orders or it moving on its own with an agenda. By this point he mentally returns to focus on the two with him as they continue speaking.

”Otokogi-sensei, Hachiko-dono. I'll carry the witness to wherever we decide to go, my choice would be to drop him off with my close acquaintances in Sakahone. Though I'm open to any and all suggestions, *OUTSIDE* of killing him."

“Yes, I agree what happened to those people was….unfortunate. Poor souls. However, above all else, I can honestly say with all of my soul that…”

After a brief pause she lets out the remainder of the sentence, uttering something that only makes the elder sigh.

“I am REMORSELESS.~”

He has met people like her before, those who care little next to nothing about the Rukongai or its people. Her words, that may cut deep with the Fourth Seat, find no surface to scratch the elder, again he drains out the fun from her scathing words, but her focus now seems to be more so set on Shin’eki than him. The theatrics of her personality shift were lost on the Old man as she makes her move between them, when he turns to look he doesn’t look at her nor follow her movements, he looks at where she is going to be. He only watches in silence as he has considered the young woman not to be a threat or traitor to the Soul Society, a bit of a psychopath, yes, but still an ally. A Noble would have to pay her in their own blood to get her to do what they want it seems and even then there is no guarantee that they possess enough blood for payment or if she would even follow through with what they ask. Coming to this conclusion is why he has remained silent, letting her speak and act as she will. For Shin’eki this would be a good time for him to learn to deal with antagonizing allies, people who will say and do things to get under their skin, to force them to act out of character or out of line and for him to understand the level of danger he faces should he act out on emotions alone. Otokogi has seen many friends, allies, and even foes die because they act out on an emotional outburst rather than remaining calm.

“I do have regrets~ I lament that they died so quickly. I wish they had been stronger so that they would have lasted longer and I could have killed them slower!”

”Take care, Vice-Captain Goseikanjo, I hope we meet again under better circumstances.”

Otokogi combats her in his own way using the weapon of kindness, saying a farewell with zero hostility. Once she vanished Otokogi raised a brow as he spotted a piece of paper sitting in the place Hachiko once was. He approaches it, picking it up and examining it then bringing it over to Shin’eki. Before addressing what was on the paper he answers the young man's inquiry about where to take their captive.

”I know of many places to take him, however I do not know how far this negative influence stretches. There are gangs I know who could protect this man for centuries but have they been corrupted too? We cannot risk it, take him to your acquaintances if you believe you can trust them. I’ll be heading back to my Division to dispatch some members to clean up this unfortunate situation here. Also, take this paper. I’m an advocate of the Hell Butterflies and as such I do not use a Denreishinki, besides this seems more so like it was meant for you rather than me.”

He passes the paper off to the young man then begins making his way out of the forest with his hands behind his back.

”I’m going to roam the Rukongai for a bit and see what else I can turn up and if any of my old acquaintances are still trustworthy and can help me out. Take care for now and watch out for yourself. Be sure to keep me and Vice-Captain Goseikanjo in the loop if anything new turns up as I shall be doing the same.”

With a wave the elder vanishes with a flicker of Shunpo, for now his next destination is unknown as the Rukongai is a massive place. However, for him, he knows just the right spots to gather more info, as long as they haven’t turned traitors on their own people.

Pulling the single thread, they possessed, of this entangled web of manipulation and deceit in the form of the unconscious witness, and ex-antiseireitei sympathizer onto his back. Shin'eki would give but just a glimpse of his true strength despite his small figure. In what could only be described as the herculean potential this boy carried, his gaze would remain cemented onto the sanguine-haired lieutenant. Careful to watch her every move, as to prepare himself for any foul play as he came to expect against the female.

“Yes, I agree what happened to those people was….unfortunate. Poor souls. However, above all else, I can honestly say with all of my soul that… I am REMORSELESS.~”

The female’s words trailed behind her movement. While Shin’eki’s eyes tried to keep up with what followed, all that his eyes could register of her became a blur, his body failing to react. Despite his half-century spent in the desolate wilds, that was Hueco Mundo, the strength he believed he’d accumulated had now been dwarfed in comparison to the two giants around him. His lake of strength was quickly swallowed by her sea of reiatsu as everything became black. Within Shin’s mind, his imagination began to illustrate the murderous intent the female had begun to emit from her being. His steady footing soon became replaced with a viscous scarlet liquid that ensnared his legs, as the sky before him was replaced with a darkened silhouette of death, and it loomed over his miniscule figure. Her essence taunting him, threatening his very life.

Evil-Hachiko-Energy.png

Quickly snapping to, Shin’eki would find himself returned to the forest, his feet nestled securely within a tuft of foliage, his legs shaking under the weight of her intimidating presence. Realizing his life was in no immediate danger, the boy would instinctively grip upon the kamon of the man, finding his weight had not been altered. This quick surmise of a deduction revealed this woman, albeit more demon than shinigami, was not an enemy. At least in terms of the grand scheme that they had now found themselves within. For if she were, both he and the man Shin carried would’ve been made mincemeat out of.

“I do have regrets~ I lament that they died so quickly. I wish they had been stronger so that they would have lasted longer and I could have killed them slower!”

”Take care, Vice-Captain Goseikanjo, I hope we meet again under better circumstances.”

Turning his attention toward the lieutenant of the third division, Shin’s face would reveal nothing short of shock and confusion. It was apparent the female’s moves and spiritual pressure barely phased the elder, which only further illustrated the difference in power between himself and the others. Even despite his refusal of a promotion to a third seated officer within fifth, and his otherwise proven prowess against others of his caliber, even in the eyes of other lieutenants, his place here was quickly overshadowed. Perhaps his time away from Seireitei really had weakened him, after all his time away had only proved that the very organization he had sworn an oath to, centuries ago, had become foreign to him, regardless of his now fragile sense of familiarity. While in his state of remembrance, Shin would be drawn back with the arrival of Aijō-sensei handing him a slip of folded paper and instilling within him a sense of duty with his words.

I’m an advocate of the Hell Butterflies and as such I do not use a Denreishinki, besides this seems more so like it was meant for you rather than me. I’m going to roam the Rukongai for a bit and see what else I can turn up and if any of my old acquaintances are still trustworthy and can help me out. Take care for now and watch out for yourself. Be sure to keep me and Vice-Captain Goseikanjo in the loop if anything new turns up as I shall be doing the same.”

Watching the elder wave back toward him, only to disappear a second later, Shin would adjust his grip upon the incapacitated man, heaving him over his shoulder. Taking a few steps, the seated officer would begin to make his way out of the forest, before imitating the elder before him, as he too flickered out of sight mid stride. Slipping the paper into his shuhakusho, Shin would look onward as his next destination was the very location of his origin. Hopefully his arrival there would spark excitement and a sense of lost comradery that would permit the citizens of Sakahone (逆骨, Reverse Bone) to oblique to his rather dire and unorthodox request.

On the matter of the Jigokuchō, such a concept had become so foreign to him, that until he was reminded of their existence, he had all but forgotten about the message carrying butterflies. Perhaps it was because of the lieutenant’s old customs, and his admittance to not keeping up with the Seireitei’s times when it came to the vast utilization of the Dereishiki. The device had become so customary to the Shinigami of today, to the very society of Seireitei, that Shin’eki wouldn’t know where he’d be without one, and with that being said, he’d now have to rely on such an archaic practice, but perhaps this new transition would, as Aijō-sensei so wittingly put it, be a better fit considering the officer’s usual knack for needing to have such devices replaced. At least having a warranty for such things existed now, it was always nice to have the newest model ahead of many other shinigami. A long journey would separate Shin’eki from his destination, however hopefully Aijō-sensei would reach him with new intel and a better plan before he had gotten too far off.

Listen While You Read

The Gentle Breeze of Tamaya was a Soul experienced beyond even his years, one that had amassed a wisdom even the most degenerate would be stupid to ignore. The obstacle-ridden centuries of life had gifted the Old Man knowledge only a handful of others who called the Seireitei home possessed.

The Rukongai was a vast place, full of mystery and intrigue beyond the understanding of those who ruled over it. Without question the Royals believed themselves omnipotent, as was the nature of the aristocrat to do so, but such foolery couldn’t be further from the truth. The Rukongai was a living ecosystem, hundreds of seemingly unrelated subgroups coming together to form a beast of its own. The Wandering City existed before the Seireitei, in its primitive and lawless state, and it would continue to do so, in its own fashion, if the Gotei 13 were to ever fall. In truth, there existed secret societies who still lived by the old ways in their own little world, led by powerful Souls, some older than the Seireitei itself, who looked upon the Seireitei as an adult would a child.

One such place existed within the Seventy-Ninth District of the Southern Rukongai, known ironically to the Soul Society as Tenki (天気, heaven). A peculiar and head-scratching name for a District recognized as an endless wasteland, devoid of life, where most went to disappear. A common tale of folklore within the Rukongai, that Tenki was a cursed place, and all who ventured into it never returned. Some versions of the tale depicted the District as a breeding-ground for Hollows, a destination for their Garganta; others spoke of an ancient and wicked Shinigami who lived even before the dawn of the modern Soul Society, who possessed the power to make others disappear. But alas, the Old Man knew these tales to be just that, for he was one of the few who understood the truth about this District…at least to an extent, for he had never before stepped foot into the real Tenki.

As such, he would understand that if there were a place unaffected by the Great Degradation, where he could seek answers to the truth of what exactly was happening within the Soul Society, this would be one of them. And so he arrived at Tenki, appearing from nothingness into the arid badlands; it seemed like a decrepit land, lacking in life, lacking in existence, and yet, like he knew it would, as he walked and walked with his arms behind his back patiently, a small cabin made itself evident to him. It was the only semblance of civilization for hundreds of miles.

You see, like the Old Man understood, there were things about this place that would only be revealed if he wished them to. Only through his grace would one unsee the lie that was his domain.

If the Old Man were to enter the dark cabin, he would find it empty save for a small table with two chairs; one chair empty, and one chair seated by a hooded Soul, their visage masked by shadows.

There were questions to be asked, and answers to be given; but who would ask the questions, and who would answer?

While traveling through the Rukongai, leaping from building to building, Otokogi made sure to travel in areas where he could be “taken by surprise”. Areas where there would be no witnesses if he were to be attacked, he did this to lure out anyone who may have been watching him and the others in the forest or even tailing him. As he moved to the further out reaches of the districts he began to realize he wasn’t being tailed, even stopping for a moment to look back in the direction he had come from. He sighs with disappointment, not because he was expecting a fight but rather because he thought if someone did attack he’d be able to get a step closer to figuring this entire mess out. This is when he decides to take a different approach, his gaze shifting towards the further out reaches of the Rukongai, if he wanted to solve this mystery he’ll have to go to a place where the Great Degradation never happened, the Seventy-Ninth District of the Southern Rukongai, Tenki (天気, heaven).

He begins to move again, without hesitation or a need to steel himself. For most they have only heard stories of what these distant places in Soul Society were like and for them it was only stories. Killers, thieves, bandits, and the like congregate out there along with the occasional Hollow presence, for Otokogi these were not stories but experiences that held the weight of truth behind them. These stories may have formed a metaphoric wall that protected them from the Great Degradation and other corrupt influences. The outer districts are dangerous and lawless, but they are still pure, they can be trusted. The merit of one’s being is weighed more than any coin as coin can easily be taken but trust and merit are not so easily earned. Otokogi ventures into a place shrouded by more than just the surface level stories told in the Seireitei and higher Districts, Tenki.

He understands a bit about the place, enough to place it at the top of his list of trusted avenues to check for information without the risk of those around him being corrupted by nobles. His speedy trip through the endless wastes of Tenki comes to a halt as he spots a lone cabin. He adjusts his senses, Reikaku and the natural five, to spot a sign of life only to discover a single soul within the cabin. He approaches it cautiously, standing at the door as a gust of wind washes over the wastes, small rocks tumbling across one another, dead plants rustle and break beneath the gust. His right hand moves forward, placing it firmly against the door for a brief moment and only after leaving it there for a few seconds does he push against it to open it and enter. He removes his hand from the door allowing it to close behind him, his hand returning behind his back.

The Old Man walks forward, the floor of the cabin creaking with every step he takes towards the empty seat. He does not greet the man before him as he suspects this person already knows of him and someone above him anticipated the Old Man’s arrival. He does not think his own reputation precedes him in any way but rather he would have known the name of anyone who would have made the trip out here. Perhaps this cabin only appeared in Otokogi’s path of travel because he wanted it to. He pulls on the empty seat, creating a space so that he may walk around and seat himself down before scooting it forward to the table. He places both hands on the table, fingers interlocking with one another and sits in silence for a few moments before finally speaking.

”I’ve come seeking answers for my questions. I believe you know what questions I wish to ask and I believe he has the answers I seek.”

Listen While You Read

Shin'eki Uemura

The band of three disbanded, first the crazed Vice-Captain of Fourth, and then the wiseman, leaving Shin’eki to his own device, alone to carry the burden of transporting their only witness to safety. With the incapacitated suspect over his shoulder, the young officer flashed in and out of existence as he made his way to the only place he believed would provide both him and his captive safety.

As he strode from District to District, musing over the many details of what he’d just experienced, the sound of tempoed and methodical clapping would ring to his ears. It was coming from up ahead; with the very first ring, a tiny silhouette appeared in the far distance. With his next step forward, the clap came again, the shape of a male growing in tow. It only took several steps to recognize who stood in Shin’eki’s way, with hands clasped in front of him, the male’s golden orbs leering mockingly at him. Aside from the clap of what surely had been the male’s hands, none of Uemura’s other senses would have been disturbed, not even his Reikaku, and so what awaited him had gone unnoticed. Such was the way of the Onmitsukido.

03534605f90946dea30cfff073dec812.png

Shin’eki would know the face of the Soul who stood before him: Toshiyuki Shihōin, Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukido. The Shihōin noble glared at his prey silently, his menacing smile unmoving, until he finally spoke. “Well, if it isn’t the Prince’s little pet. I’ve been hearing troubling news, little rat…”

The noble looked about him playfully, at the decrepit buildings of the Thirty-Second District of the Western Rukongai, Hokuseikawa (北西川, Northwest River).

“I’ve heard that little gremlin of a Vice-Captain did some terrible things out in the Forty-Eighth, and that you aided her…” His gaze fell back onto Shin’eki. “...in committing some atrocious crimes. To make matters worse, the Old Man of Third was involved as well? Tsk, tsk, tsk.”

The Commander-in-Chief looked upon the limp body of the captive over Shin’eki’s shoulder, and said, “What do you have there, little rat? A captive? I wonder what information he has to offer…?”

His grin grew larger.

“You’re under arrest, Fourth Seat of Fifth, Shin’eki Uemura, for the murder of innocent Rukongai citizens, and for involvement in illegal Hollow-Shinigami experimentation. Lay down the body, and surrender your Zanpakuto. If you don’t cooperate…”

“...I’ll be sure to give you a swift death.”

Hachi Ikimaku

Upon arriving to Kusajishi, the Wind-Walker would find himself at the steps of the front entrance to one of the two villages reported to have been massacred. An unnerving silence had befallen the tribe, its obliteration confirmed by the half severed buildings, demolished rubble, and plumes of smoke rising from every corner. The stench of death overbore the green of surrounding forests, red painted over mounds of lifeless souls.

Flames flickered in the distance.

The silence broke from the screech of a young girl.

If Third Seat Ikimaku were to go in search of this newfound lead, of which he assuredly would, he’d find himself deep into the otherwise motionless village. Before him would stand an enormous Hollow, an Adjuchas by all accounts, though would someone from the Third understand the nuances of the different levels of Hollow evolution? Within its large grasp was a young soul, a girl, face pale, her life being squeezed out of her. Through spiritual sensing, the Third Seat would estimate the Hollow to be of Spirit Class 4.

Peculiar, though, that since arriving, the spiritual signature at this village tasted as pure Hollow. No signs of a hybrid signature…were the accounts of the reports mistaken? The answer to a question the Breaker of Chains would need to discover.

Otokogi Aijo

The Old Man entered, sat, and made his position clear. A statement to which no answer came, the elder Shinigami and the specter before him sitting in silence. When the hooded figure finally spoke, she remained unmoving.

“The Gentle Breeze of Tamaya, we meet again…” the feminine voice bore a hint of amusement, taking over the cabin as if the words were being spoken from every possible increment of space. “...and after so long, all you’ve got to give is a plea for help?”

Silence, unmoving.

“Why would he help you, Vice-Captain? It seems the Seireitei is keen on remaining in its petulant state.”

A blink of the eye, and the elder Shinigami would find himself where the specter once sat, the two having switched places. A glance around and he would find the cabin’s contents reversed, like a mirror-image…

“What have you done during all your time at your station? One could argue you’ve been an abetter to the Soul Society’s struggles…”

If the Old Man were to attempt to uncover further information through his spiritual sensing, he’d find the hooded figure before him emanating the spiritual power of a Spirit Class 4, the signature permeating throughout the entire cabin. A question he surely would ask himself, who exactly was this soul he spoke with?

“So tell me, why should he answer your questions?”

With the brunt of his speed on full display, there was next to nothing that could stop the adamant Third Seat from reaching his destination. To have the horrors of time repeat themselves, innocent souls suffering at the hands of the endless hell that plagued the Rukongai's outer districts–It felt sinful to allow it to happen without contest. Perhaps he was naive–A fool to believe that he could save everyone there in Kusajishi time and time again. He would undoubtedly die the fool, never caring about the risk or danger that presented itself when his goal was set before him. In a litter of districts, still images of Hachi remain stagnant on rooftops, until the moment a small breeze swells in and blows them away. These fragments of his visage, are only a piece of his physical form from many moments ago. They fade away as more are made far and wide in multiplicities along the hundreds upon hundreds of kilometers that made up the wandering city. The symphonious clacking of geta against shingles eludes the ears of any that would hope to perceive it–His steps silent and foreboding, cautiously and graciously carried by a subtle wind, allowing the Third Seated Officer to glide with every massive stride.

Reaching the border between both Kusajishi and Inuzuri was a small task, accomplished in mere moments. Even still, the angry brute that did not often succumb to thought found himself slightly apprehensive. Why would the Vice-Captain receive his reports normally, while Hachi was graced with the presence of an Omnitsukido agent? An agent who–at a time like this–would be better suited conducting his normal duties of making sure the slithering nobility were safe in a time of crisis. In extension to that, what were they doing all the way out here in the first place? Questions for another time, perhaps. Even from a distance, the expanded view of Kusajishi is unsightly. Fires are lit and the smell of a crimson ichor plagues Hachi’s senses. Debris is scattered and used as improper graves for the lifeless husks pinned beneath their weight. It took a great deal of strength not to fall to his knees. The proof of his failure was presented before him the moment he arrived, etched into his brain along with the many other travesties witnessed by the man. It appeared his times of turmoil and pain could not stay too far behind him, following him like a dark and looming shadow for the rest of his days. His nose furrows as his nostrils expand; a deep exhale follows, and a trail only “visible” to himself appears at the back of a blood-curdling scream.
H-H-HELPPPP!!! EEEEEEEEEKKKK!

His teeth grind against each other, each incisor piercing through with an intense overbite. His strides, however possible, increase in distance, propelling him that final amount needed that takes him from the top of the crumbling roofs, down to the dirt-pathed roads of the desolate and dilapidated village. Piles and piles of bodies horrifically stacked atop each other, the flames flickering to cast the entire ghost town in an auburn hue. Wood creaking and crumbling at its base against the spreading pyres is the only audible sound after the scream fades and loses its distant echo. This is almost immediately rectified as Hachi’s heightened hearing can perceive the squeezing of a tight grip, and air being forced from lungs as bones begin to chirr under pressure. Furthermore, his initial shock at the village’s state leaves him, allowing him to aptly focus and feel the Spiritual Pressure of the enemy before him. Almost immediately two things are noticed; One of which is its singular hollow nature. To someone who had stayed and possibly listened to the entirety of the report, they would immediately be alarmed by the fact that its Reiatsu was not dual-natured as was initially reported. Hachi–however–was not this individual, and had missed all the report's details and had set out for Kusajishi as soon as he perceived it to be in danger. With his current knowledge, he hadn’t the slightest clue as to what could be responsible.

Secondly, the potency of this enemy’s spiritual strength was not far from his own, allowing Hachi to deduce that this hollow was powerful, but he’d have no issue in taking it on. While he wasn’t extremely familiarized with the evolutionary chain of the creatures, or perhaps even had faced an enumerate amount like a soldier during the unhallowed wars–he has, however, well versed in taking on anything standing in his way, as they all bled the same. That was enough for him. Hachi turned the corner and came to a large opening in the main village street once more, the massive figure of the Hollow revealed itself and allowed him to attach an image to all of the senses that had overwhelmed him leading up to this moment. The air was smoky and filled with the tinge of blood and iron. Beneath that small, lay the silent footsteps of the Wind-Walker, with his own spiritual presence masked and concealed under the whim of elite-level control. The hollow would have yet to perceive the Shinigami a considerable distance away and would continue to tighten his grip around the helpless girl but this time, no scream would be heard. Had it finally killed her? The friction it would feel as its fingers bolstered around its prey would be an act of imagination, a side-effect of phantom limb syndrome. The arm, with the girl in hand, found itself on the ground below, the damsel already fighting the zombie-like grip of the severed hand to release herself. Blood spurts violently and suddenly from the socket in which the arm originally came, creating a waterfall of blood that contributed to the existing puddles below. Behind this Hollow who would soon feel the pain that lagged from the precise and near-cauterizing slice, Hachi would manifest. His blade was drawn, already stained red by his enemy, and lifted far above his head before coming down swiftly like a guillotine. The reflection of the flames in the blade flickers and creates a glint of orange as the Zanpakuto meets flesh and bone. The base of the mask begins to shatter indiscriminately, as the blade’s flow is enough to conclude a complete bisection of the large foe. As Hachi lands, the enemy splits in two and folds outward and downward like layers of decayed skin, before vanishing in the wind in the form of blackened dust and ash.

His hand extends downward to the injured girl who has only just now been able to free herself, while his other hand still firmly grips his Zanpakuto. While this hollow was a powerful foe, Hachi wasn't quite certain it was an enemy capable of destruction of this caliber, which surely spanned to even more villages other than this one. His head remained on a swivel, ever-vigilant, as the man had no intention of leaving Kusajishi until the true threat was completely quelled. While his face was rather still and empathetic to the individual before him, his instincts allowed him to grow wary and watch them like a hawk. How did they, of all people, manage to survive a massacre such as this? Something didn't quite add up, yet he refused to play the game until all the cards were on the table. One thing was for sure, he would find out the answers to all his questions in due time, even if it was to his detriment.
