Martyrs of the Fallen

One by one the hollow swarm is being divided either by the onslaught of Karakura Town or under the regiment of Emilia in Naruki City. According to the plan, the shinigami did exactly what Ximena wanted: to divide their forces and simply be diverted while taking as many shinigami as they did to the hollows in their invasion. Ximena did not rally these hollows through fear but the shared hatred toward those who invaded and slaughtered them in their home Hueco Mundo, and a simple message being conveyed: If you are brave enough, come feast in Karakura Town, and survivors will be granted the opportunity of evolution into Arrancar. Hollow fueled by rage, instinct, and a burning desire for revenge came flooding into the world of the living one by one. However, not just the hollow came charging in, but so did the shinigami, which turned this into a small-scale skirmish. The only difference is that the shinigami came in revealing their hands, yet the hollow side only revealed what their enemies already knew about them.

Just like Ximena wanted, she managed to split the forces of the shinigami, but she also needed to make sure the hollows didn't get decimated. Preoccupied with one shinigami, she never took her attention and awareness about what was going on. Even though she couldn't properly observe them, one kept an ominous eye peering from the darkness of the Garganta with an ever-watchful gaze. With the entrance of newcomers on the scene in a joint effort, the two managed to dispatch the menos grande who gradually developed intelligence, but they all were learning that was one of many. However, the hollow that raged about was not who she awaited, they were only the welcoming party to bide time. She never banked on the hollows completely but they were simply the push needed for the true threats her right-hand adjucha went to rally. When one of the Captains of the Gotei 13 decided to show herself appearing above the Shikai cage and decided to go straight into his Bankai, taking over the battlefield. Quite an interesting sight as the Captain rained down lightning and broke through Omoni's Shikai with each lightning strike that shredded through to smite the hollows inside.

"We choose our fates, and this is where we will make our final stand and die!"

One larger Garganta opened up wide and instantly they all experienced multiple adjucha spiritual power pressures rising. A small army of adjucha class hollow came stampeding out with spears, pikes, and hollow bones turned into weapons. All were unfortunately adjucha who no longer had the potential to evolve and knew they were destined to revert to Menos Grande and be stuck as mindless creatures. Instead of surrendering to de-evolution, they choose a path of their own, to die on the battlefield their way, and take things into their hands. This became their final stand, already accepting death over losing themselves completely, they marched forward with each one of them charging a cero. Then just like that, a multicolored massive barrage of energy crashed into what remained of the cage encasing the center of the city, and carved through the city flanking from the opposite city outskirts of the Menos Grande. Unlike the lower hollows, who were easy pickings so far for the shinigami despite these adjucha not being on par with the Arrancar or in the same class as the adjucha contending with Omoni, they moved as a single unit and were not going to be an easy takedown. The true incursion had begun with nothing to lose, the adjucha ignored the humans with their sole focus on all shinigami and a higher focus placed on those with higher spiritual energy.

On the opposite end of the city, on the outskirts, one brave shinigami remained alone against a new horde of Menos Grande, and some abnormal ones who indulged in cannibalism, devouring their kind. The wolf shinigami, Hyoroshi managed to avoid one danger as he remained on the offensive. How long could he keep it, though, was the question, not understanding the seriousness of the threat at hand, as these were threats even Captain-level shinigami worried about on a single sighting. He, however, faced twenty-four of them with some showing signs of intelligence, and continued to make the mistake of not understanding the seriousness of the situation. The few that he did manage to bring down required him to exert much more of his energy to manage a substantial amount of damage to kill them until soon he found himself exhausted. He left the other Menos Grande to feed upon their brethren while he tried to reunite with his comrades at the heart of this nightmare. The Menos Grande who had spoken and leaped high above in the air took sight of the fleeing shinigami but came down with earth shaking thud directly on top of one of the evolving Menos. Acting with a greater intelligence it targeted one of the Gillian that possessed a greater amount of spiritual energy snuffing its hope, but harnessing its potential as its own.

That one decision is what he needed to reach its full potential as the Gillian body began to destabilize and morph, caving into itself. Crying out in pain from the transformation it now underwent, cutting through the skies was a pillar of pure energy being unleashed like a beacon. The energy of its evolution felt throughout the city of Karakura Town was mistaken as an adjucha class hollow was just born, and its spiritual energy skyrocketed before finally stabilizing. Remembering the last location it spotted the shinigami take off, the first thing it decided to do was exert its command over the mindless Gillian who was not being feasted upon. Its voice crackled with a small insect-like clitter after it spoke, initiating the pincer attack upon the city. From one side of the outskirts, the Menos Grande marched while others remained back to continue to feast to evolve into adjucha as well with their large-scale cero raining down toward the center of the city and to the skies where Captain Kasu provided support. On the opposite end, the small adjucha army with nothing to lose mercilessly attacked all shinigami before them, even some willing charging unstable cero becoming deadly bombs to annihilate their foes with them. No longer did the hollow act out like savage beasts, but acted with cohesion on their attack no different than the valiant shinigami who rushed to become the saviors of Karakura Town.

Trembling arms tightened around Tomi’s neck as she raced toward one of the barriers set up by her division. Hollows and shinigami in the throes of combat blurred past, but as they moved Tomi took note that the hollows avoided the humans. So why had they swarmed the child? Her expression darkened. She wanted nothing more than to tear the colony queen’s head asunder from her body. Using a child as bait was deplorable, but she didn’t have time to worry about that. She’d have to leave the wretch to the others.

As Tomi strode up to the massive barrier one of the shinigami within it snapped to attention. Her lilac eyes settled on them as they created an opening in the barrier for just long enough to let her in. Without a word to anyone there, she knelt on one knee, feeling the added weight of the girl slip away. ”Are you going to fight more of those monsters, miss?”

”Tomi. Yes, I am. You should be safe here, but if anything happens to this,” Tomi tapped on the barrier to emphasize what she was talking about. ”Then you must run as fast as you can to somewhere safe.” Tomi gently tucked the child’s unruly pale blue hair behind her ear.

Standing to leave, she stared at the shinigami who opened the barrier in the eye. ”Don’t let the barrier break.” As she stepped back through the barrier, she spared a single glance back at the people huddled within. Tomi didn’t let her thoughts linger on them for too long because the arrival of two more shinigami of note to the world of the living heralded in new chaos. One was someone she hadn’t yet met but the other was none other than her own Captain. Her face remained unchanged but inside Tomi seethed. The absentee captain thought she could just roll back in and what? Save the day? Her fingers tightened around Tsukuyomi’s hilts, her knuckles turning stark white.

Face turned skywards, Tomi watched her captain’s every move, a sinking pit forming in her stomach as Kasu immediately released her shikai. It didn’t take long for that sinking feeling to intensify as she unleashed bankai. Kasu was giving the enemy ammunition in the form of information, though Tomi didn’t have much room to talk. She’d used her own shikai after all, but she only did so to protect a defenseless child and had no intention of utilizing her bankai unless absolutely necessary.

The onslaught of lightning that Kasu had rained down upon the city and the hollows within it had only just subsided when another garganta ripped the sky open and another army marched into the streets. She had to meet up with the others quickly. As she headed off in the direction that Iwamura was in, a pillar of energy lit up the night sky. Once it dissipated, with a single step of her shunpo, Tomi brought herself to hover high in the sky above the newly evolved adjucha.

Glowing, spiked, violet chains snaked out from her blades, moving at lightning speed as they swirled around the adjucha and constricted. The spikes on the chains effortlessly pierced the hollow, holding firm as she stared down at the creature.

Don’t lose focus, Darling. Always remember-

Tomorrow is a hope, never a promise.

Whispers of the past kept her grounded. She would ensure tomorrow would be a promise for those she’d sworn to protect. Her grip shifted, wrapping the chains around her blades as she pointed the razor sharp toes of her steel shoes toward her target. To ensure the kill, she focused her reiryoku to her arms and legs, empowering her next strike. With one quick pull, she barreled down toward the adjucha at such a speed that she appeared to be there in the sky one second then gone the next. A crater splintered across the ground as she landed, her shoes piercing the hollows head and splitting its mask open as the sheer force of her body mass at that speed reduced the rest of it to a shapeless mass of flesh.

As the gillian marched out to follow the orders they’d been given, one chain lashed out, slicing through them with ease. The other chain slithered between those who continued to gorge themselves on their dead allies, until it pulled tight, ensnaring their throats. Without even so much as a twitch of a muscle, the chain severed their heads from their bodies.

Stepping off the Reishi plates formed beneath his feet as he headed towards the direction of Tomi, the Kuchiki came to an abrupt halt mid air in the wake of the hollows he had cut through. His eyes widened in surprise. 'It can't be!' He scanned the area, then looked towards the ground. To others, this reiatsu was foreign, shinigami but unfamiliar to anyone of them. This reiatsu, the person it belonged to was no stranger to Gyōja.
He alters his path, hastening his advance towards the source of reiatsu, a gust of wind billowing behind him with every step of shunpo.

"What are you doing here?!"

Gyōja was fully aware just how knew the girl was, aware of how she has only recently graduated from the Academy. With their Captain having been absent until recently, and no Vice Captain assigned to their Division he had attempted to have Ren brought over to his Squad once she graduated. He knew she'd be annoyed at having to work alongside him, but it would allow him t better keep an eye on her at the very least.

Unfortunately, his plan fell through. Instead, the Captain of the Second Division had retrieved her. At the end of the day, an active Captain held much more weight than a man from a dishonored noble household, a man who wasn't even a leader of the household to boot. Frustrated there was nothing he could do, aside from hoping that she'd become strong enough by the next time they met.

The weight of his Captain's reiatsu descended on the city, the woman unleashing her Bankai to turn the tides of the event. Gyōja glanced down at Aojūkiri. While his feelings on his Captain's absence being glossed over, he was at least thankful that she was here at the moment. Karakura Town was in turmoil, being overrun with Hollows and Menos Grande. Using her Bankai was the right call.

ill'

Gyōja's eyes narrowed, as his ears rung lightly.

'Kill'

'Stop. It.' His voice croaked out only within the confines of his mind. He moves to refocus his gaze and attention back on Ren when-

790683b6b8349b4b86a72113374a32c5.png

"RELEASE ME! AND LET. ME. KILL"

He finds himself face to face with the spirit of Aojūkiri. The unexpected appearance of his Zanpakuto caused him to take a step back. The spirit faded into mist, as Ren now stood in his stead. He glanced down towards his sealed blade, the sound of crashing thunder bringing him back to the here and now, along with the spiking of Hollow reiatsu. As the various cero went thundering through the city, blasting through buildings and the like, Gyōja would grab Ren, dragging her into the skies with him.

Some of the cero collided with the inverted pyramid shaped barriers. Fortunately, rather than cracking or even waning in strength from the force of the cero, instead the blasts from the hollows would find themselves repelled back outward. Following Gyōja's instructions on how to accomplish it with their individual abilities, the shinigami of the Thirteenth Division had layered the binding spell Seki over Tōzanshō. Their chanting ensuring that both spells were reinforced by their respective incantations. This unexpected backlash of energy would serve to deal with any immediate surrounding threats while also further protecting the barrier and those shielded within its confines.

Darting over the streets and buildings of Karakura, the hoardes of Hollows with Ren in tow, he'd pass over the area Tomi was dealing with some of the Hollows.

"TOMI!"

He called out to her, hoping she'd hear him, or at the least hear something and notice his reiatsu near. They were battling on too many fronts, they needed to come together. At the same time, he needed to ensure Ren's safety, this was a death zone for someone as green as her. His steps both propelling and guiding him towards the direction of the other reiatsu further out, a lone shinigami battling it out by himself. There was strength in numbers, even the hollows seem to recognize this truth.

With blade in hand, he was little more than a sharpened blur, slicing through hollows that came into his path as he went to the direction of Hyoroshi, hoping Tomi would follow suit. From there, maybe they could turn things around.

"Stay near me Ren..no matter what."

Emblazoned.

She felt emblazoned as she cut through wave after wave of Hollow-kind that approached her or neared Namakizu’s limbs. Limbs that had already laid waste to the wave of creatures that she had trapped within as an attempt to cut down the enemy’s numbers and to defend the city of Karakura, the same fate befell the second wave of Hollow, Gillian and Adjucha alike.

In twists and tangles they grew to acclimate to their individual enemy, easily* decimating the smallest abomination to the greatest Gillian that emerged from their respective Garganta within Namakizu’s bunker who loomed overhead swallowed by the charging of their malicious Cero in preparation of the destruction of more humans as well as their home doomed to fail once Namakizu impaled them. This was how it went, like clockwork destroying the numbers that chose to manifest inside of her makeshift prison until suddenly Omoni noticed Namakizu’s shell break beneath the might of a captain’s assault and a finely timed Cero. This left Namakizu’s shell to withdraw in response to being bombarded by Kasu’s extraordinary lightning back into its original club-like form.

Easily, Hageshi could have handled everything easily but yet again others were interfering with her efforts.

Easily, because Omoni Hageshi was able to do something most soul reapers were incapable of doing. Periodically, she was able to attain a level of power that did not normally reflect her own that was dependent on a very particular factor. Unseated or seated it didn’t matter to Omoni. She had never been concerned about the rank that she was initially placed in because at her core, the matron was an almost primitive type of simple. As such, Omoni had never attempted to present herself or her value to the captain of the tenth division or any captain for that matter. Nearly a permanent fixture in the land of the living, she had met her captain a total of three times since she had been stationed in the tenth and assigned to protect the city of Karakura. Furthermore, It had also been the same amount of time that she had returned to the Seireitei as well and this was made to be completely on purpose.
The grumpy oni charged with protecting the land of the living that never sleeps with a really bad temper, this was the moniker that she had earned among her “peers.” As if they could be called peers. In reality they were more like face-less voices that mumbled their rumors and gossip wondering who this woman was that refused to share a space with her brethren in the barracks. Mumbled, because no one had the stomach to complain about that to her face anymore confidently than a worm might have.

Truly, what Omoni cherished above all was spending her days in the human’s domain. She loved the sky, she adored their customs and strange clothing as well as the various products and devices they had their hands in building. They surprised her everyday like a constant source of entertainment for which she found was bringing her a sense of peace in a world of irritants. It just happened to be that Omoni had a stupidly short fuse and was quick to erupt upon whoever or whatever was in her immediate vicinity and so, purely to avoid unnecessary conflict, she had decided she wanted nothing to do with most of her fellow reapers. There was no real sense of camaraderie when it came to Hageshi as she discovered that she and everyone else was better off if she handled the enemies that plagued Karakura on her own.
She thrived in isolation.

During one of those few and far between meetings with her captain, it was seen fit that she remained in Karakura indefinitely. She was a one woman show, and it was decided that she live there amongst the humans and respond to whatever threat reared its ugly head accordingly and this was because her captain put his trust in her unorthodox method of deploying her Reiryoku.

In pertinent to labels, Omoni identified as a ‘Subconscious’ anomaly both the intensity as well as devastation and the very level of her spiritual power could be incumbent on what her subconscious perceived and how it perceived the world around her. Verily, In the case of an unmanned consciousness, most experienced being born with volatile pools of energy that reacted to a certain trigger rather than being able to rely on traditional approach of concentration. For them, there was virtually no control over the amount of power that they were able to produce and maintain which would prove difficult to coexist with for most without the iron will of Omoni Hageshi.

To be endowed by her own spiritual power was akin to breathing for her, especially when her rage built itself up because it guided her. It directed her towards her desires which had become skewed and altered once she became influenced by her consciously increasing anger and that proved to be enough to alarm her special brand of subconsciousness.
For omoni, it was anger. The more infuriated that the woman got, the more exceedingly violent both she and her spiritual power became to the point that in some cases if she got angry enough, the unseated officer would display levels more closely resembling that expected of a vice-captain and have even reached that seen of a captain’s in the most emergent of circumstances. Of course, the rate at which such an occurrence happened was rare and it would present itself in very unpredictable ways during the flow of battle that she, an unyielding warrior, was capable of finding amongst the chaos infesting her mind.

Omoni panted her rage and the blue flames of her irately unstable reiatsu licked around the corners of her lips as if she were some kind of dragon beginning to breathe fire. First, that pompous pompadour wearing fuck had been late to meet her in the living world. She’d counted on him being there and that meant something to her but she had managed the crisis without him like countless times before. After that, he proceeded to taunt her to the point that she had nearly thrown a car at him and then to add insult to injury he’d bossed her around and made off with the fight he knew she’d been waiting for, nay, destined for!

The adjucha charging full force at her did nothing to hinder the way that she all out launched herself toward its open jaws and awaiting talons.

““WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS?! WHO DID I PISS OFF?! I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE WRITTEN MY OWN OBITUARY BEFORE STEPPING THROUGH THAT DAMN DOOR! — OH THANK GOD.”

Dashing past a hysterical shinigami that seemed to be losing all composure with every passing second and whom donned an eye patch, Hageshi’s eyes had locked with her opponent’s and although the spawn’s leer was intended to be intimidating, it was greatly overshadowed by the infuriated mania exuding from her instantaneously.

She was mad.

She was mad at that damned adjucha but it was not because of the death and destruction it had been summoned to cause…it had been because it was in her way. A flicker of hesitation on her adversaries' part would have been understandable for the figure barreling toward it should have looked more like a monster than it did. There was more hunger in her eyes, void of fear as well as more frenzy and astronomically more ferocity radiating from Hageshi and in the throes of her animosity she had currently amassed the amount of power to prove it.

In an act of abrupt change, Just before closing the gap and clashing with the line of adjucha, Omoni leapt into the air and Namakizu’s malleable bludgeon coiled around her body completely. It sealed her up to a sharp point which then drilled into the earth and in an instant, she was gone. Her chaotic Reiryoku fluctuated giving away her position, and that would have been an important oversight had she intended to hide from her enemy.
Once underground, the spines on Namakizu acted as a way to propel her through the ground at a far faster pace than she was capable of physically so much so that she cleared both the armies and the line of approaching adjucha with ridiculous ease. As far as her ability to know where she was going went, her constant vigilance over the city of the Karakura had her fighting on the land under their feet as much as she was living on it. Undoubtedly, She sure knew how to get lost in the big city but when it came to her arsenal of excavation tactics, she knew the bowels of Karakura like the back of her hand. At the very least, she had developed a rather elaborate tunnel system that stretched the entirety of the city through which she could use to fight the occasional hollow or travel to different spaces in a quick amount of time.

Full speed ahead, Omoni beelined for her real target and left the rabble behind for the multitude of shinigami who were arriving to contend with. After all, in her target’s own words…she did ‘have bigger fish to fry.’ That was what he said, wasn’t it? Yes, her fellow shinigami Jinnosuke had stated earlier that they did have bigger fish to fry and so naturally this could only mean that her opponent she was burrowing furiously toward was Yamazaki himself. The same Yamazaki that was currently indulging himself in the fight that he had CLEARLY stolen out from under her, the same Yamazaki that was reportedly assigned to her squad and her oldest friend from her days in the academy. Yes, in one spectacular explosion, she broke out of the ground by his side and began to attack him both verbally and physically. Although she did not employ her shikai against him directly, Namakizu acted as more of a weapon of intimidation and damage rather than an actual weapon meant to hurt him. It hadn't been the first time that she had attacked Jinnosuke and so, she adhered to the way that she usually unleashed her anger albeit this time she seemed a tad bit more serious as if her reality had passed from a sensible one into a senseless and deluded one.

"YOU…”

At this point, Omoni’s pupils had disappeared as her eyes had become a glow with her signature cerulean reiatsu. A mindless shade over her forehead to her nose gave the oni a much darker and arguably frightening expression as the rubble and debris fell away from her like it were specks of dust instead of the boulder-sized mess that it was.

“YER’ DEAD! YA’ HEAR ME?! YA THUNDER STEALIN’ FREAK!!! YER’ DEAD!!!”

Omoni lifted her cudgel into the air, which had instantly swollen to the size comparable to a bus over her head simultaneously placing her free hand around its hilt. With a single heave, Namakizu connected with the earth between them and marked the beginning of a storm of impulsive devastation. The ground broke apart in haphazard sections, spurred on to collapse and then implode under the weight of Omoni’s skyrocketing spiritual power. The fires of her reiatsu burst through the cracks and sent the land into the sky. From this storm a tsunami of flames and gargantuan debris alongside rapturous spiritual power aimlessly crashed into the already shattered portion of Karakura but on the same hand, it’s overbearing waves and shear mammoth size would also pulverize not only Yamazaki but also, indirectly, the arrancar that had ignored her previously to do battle with Jinnosuke over herself.

Her duties were lost to her, the sanctity of being brothers and sisters in arms had ceased to exist for Omoni at this point and as she thrashed her Zanpakuto wildly. Its tentacles extended and flailed around as madly and relentlessly as she did by slashing and stabbing. Avoiding their strikes could have been child’s play for such a powerful arrancar but in tandem with Namakizu’s wrathful waves of decimation, the accuracy of evading them would have suffered tremendously due to the disorienting clouds of dust and manic destruction the storm of unchecked power had created.

Omoni’s spiritual power had spiked once she’d finally gotten her hands on Jinnosuke, to the point that if they hadn’t been staring at her, they could have sworn a Lieutenant-class level soul reaper was amongst them. The fury driven Hageshi wasn’t even paying attention to the invading Arrancar, she was out for blood and it wasn’t Hollow. In fact, this was so true that she turned to look at Ximena through the carnage of both of their making and gave her a scowl that could have stopped a charging Rhinoceros in its tracks.

Again, as she glared at Ximena, Hageshi’s Reiryoku spiked once more approaching such a dangerous level that besides herself, no one near the three of them could remain on the ground. Unlike Lieutenants or Captains, Omoni was not given a seal with which to contain her power and keep it from generating at dangerously colossal levels. In response to this, the displaced earth rose into the air around her, spinning enormous slabs robbed of their gravity of concrete and other hazardous material around her person as her spiritual power persisted on increasing, so imposing was Omoni’s presence when before she had been considered to be mediocre at best.

“Ya best go back ta’ where ya’ came from. Or I’ll make ya’ wish ya’ had.”

NOW the arrancar was getting in this monstrosity’s way. She was getting in her way to brutalize the source of her irate mayhem, Yamazaki. There didn’t seem to be an outright desire from the grumbling shinigami to pursue Ximena at all, as far as the enraged Omoni was concerned, the arrancar needed to make her exit and leave Omoni to her business unless she truly wanted to apart of it. The fight had been ruined for her, further adding to Omoni’s erratic unrest and until the Arrancar did something to prove to her that she was worth being considered a worthy opponent again, the angry soul reaper refused to acknowledge her as anything more than an annoyance, an obstacle that had better Get. Out. Of. Her. Way.

" I ain't gonna say it again."

Ren barely had time to process what was happening before the air shifted.

A gust of wind slammed into her, kicking up dust and debris, rattling the nerves she barely had a hold on in the first place.

Then—

“What are you doing here?!”

A voice—sharp, demanding—cut through the chaos like a blade.

Her head snapped toward it, golden eye locking onto the figure in front of her—

The purple-haired Shinigami.

The same one she had seen just moments ago, slicing through Menos like they were nothing, moving with the kind of precision that screamed experience.

And now—

He was looking right at her.

Like he knew her.

Like she had no damn business being there. Which, okay, fair, She didn’t have any business being there.

she lacked the actual skill to handle something like this.

One moment, she had been avoiding the summons to Second Division. The next, she had watched Captain Kagi kill someone without hesitation. Then she had met Keniro—who, somehow, was even worse than her, considering he had managed to annoy her of all people—

And now?

Now she was standing in the middle of hell on earth, surrounded by creatures she had only read about in textbooks, watching destruction unfold on a scale she had never seen before.

It was a lot to take in.

Ren did not handle stress well.

So naturally, she reacted the way she always did when she was overwhelmed-

“HEY-! WHO THE HELL ARE YA?!” she blurted, throwing a hand toward him like he was the one in the wrong here. “HOW DO YA KNOW MY NAME?! ARE YA-ARE YA SOME KIND OF CREEPY SQUAD TWO RECRUITER BECAUSE IM ALREADY REGRETTING-“

She never got to finish her sentence.

Because in the next second, she was off the ground.

“HEY, HEY, HEY—!”

The world lurched around her as she was suddenly yanked into the sky, the momentum slamming into her gut like a punch.

Wind roared in her ears, buildings blurred below, the entire city spinning beneath her in a disorienting rush of movement—

And before she could even begin to argue about it, her instincts kicked in, and she did the only thing that made sense.

She grabbed onto him.

Not because she was scared of falling—she wasn’t an idiot, she knew how to stabilize herself in midair.

But because something about this guy told her he knew exactly what he was doing, and she wasn’t about to get dropped into the middle of this chaos like a sack of rice.

“What the hell—” she started, voice strangled between shock and irritation, but the words died in her throat as the world exploded around them.

Cero. Multiple.

Beams of raw, unfiltered destruction tore through the sky, and Ren braced herself, expecting them to tear straight through the city, to flatten everything.

Except—

They bounced back.

Her eye widened. What?!

Her gaze snapped down, locking onto the faint, shimmering outlines of barriers in the distance.

She didn’t know what they were.

They weren’t like anything she had seen before—not the standard protective Kido she had learned in the Academy. They were bigger, stronger, and doing something she didn’t think barriers could do.

Whoever created them knew what they were doing.

She barely had time to process it before the purple-haired Shinigami was moving again, cutting through the air, his blade flashing, clearing a path like it was second nature to him.

And Ren?

Ren was still trying to catch up.

Not to what was happening—she could see the destruction unfolding below, could read the situation well enough to know that things were bad.

But to the sheer absurdity of where she was right now.

She really should have probably told Captain Kagi no..but she would have been dead on the floor like that man!

Now she was in hell itself, being carried through the sky by some Shinigami who knew her, but whom she had never met in her life.

And then—

"TOMI!"

The name rang out over the destruction, sharp and commanding.

She barely had time to acknowledge it before they were shifting directions, heading toward another Shinigami he clearly knew.

She could barely think, barely breathe between the speed, the destruction, the absolute insanity of the moment—

And then his voice was heard again.

“Stay near me, Ren… no matter what.”

Ren swallowed hard, her fingers tightening instinctively—

And that’s when she noticed.

She was still clutching onto him.

Fingers gripping his uniform like he was some kind of lifeline.

Her entire body stiffened.

And with no hesitation whatsoever, she yanked her hands away, shoving them against her own chest like she had just touched a damn hot stove.

She didn’t say anything.

Didn’t even look at him.

Just folded her arms tightly across her chest like she had never been holding onto him in the first place.

Great. Now she really looked like a wimpy little girl.
