Jushiro’s assumption about his path being clear to proceed on ahead was indeed false. The Captaincy candidate had every intention of saving the souls that he could. At every turn however, he was faced with a new challenge. It was becoming agonizingly annoying to him. At the same time, it was made apparent that this was no easy task. Like before, Jushiro planned on moving ahead and eliminating the threat to the poor souls down below. His initial plan involved him using two kido spells to dispatch of the enemy. The first-time round, he was faced with an interruption, and as such Jushiro had no choice but to alter his plans. This led to him abandoning his chosen tactics in favour of another plan. He was no stranger to thinking on his feet and adapting to new scenarios. Only a fool would proceed without caution, believing themselves to be impervious to having a blade pierce through their back. This wasn’t Jushiro’s style, as he was fully aware of the consequences facing him if he gets it wrong. And that is how the Arrancar who attacked him were able to be dealt with. A simple alteration of his intended plans meant a different outcome.

Jushiro’s initial opponent was defeated, blown away and reduced to ash. Surely, he could finally deal with the hollows causing havoc down below. More had spawned, he could already sense this and with great clarity too. One thing or person rather that he couldn’t quite keep track of was the moderator, Kagi Taicho. Jushiro’s mastery over sensing meant that hardly anything could escape his grasp. Even the most miniscule portion of Reiatsu can be discerned and tracked by him. What made Kagi different? He figured that Kagi was pulling the strings, causing chaos and possible sitting back watching how Jushiro would react. The Masked One had suspected that Kagi could end up being his opponent. That eventuality was at the forefront of Jushiro’s thoughts too. Now ready to set off and be the saviour and protector that he was supposed to be. Jushiro was once again interrupted by some new occurrences. It appeared that Kagi was indeed quick to act. Before we deal with the current happenings, Jushiro was successful in closing the gap and so had finally arrived where he wanted to be. He was at ground level so to speak, with hollows in his line of sight and a building towering over him. The blaze paled in comparison to the heat radiating from his Zanpakuto. Now that he had a fix on the hollows, it was even easier to target them.

It was a blur. That is how Jushiro would describe Kagi’s initial movements as he crept up on him. Appearing within his line of sight for a mere moment, far too quick for the details to even matter. It was obvious that Jushiro was dealing with a master of the flash steps much like himself. Kagi was a few feet away during what Jushiro would consider his first set of movements. In the context of it all, the first set being one of six different angled movements. Following the first movement was an orange stream of light. As if instinctively, Jushiro’s blade lashed out in a swing, releasing intense heat. This was to invoke two effects; one was to act as an opposing force clashing with the orange light. And the other was to rapidly burn away the perceived Reiatsu which made up the technique. Was this directly from Kagi Taicho? In some ways Kagi had given his location away and now it wasn’t completely impossible to track him.

However, he couldn’t stop there, since Kagi didn’t just make one move alone. Jushiro tried his best to follow the Nibantai Taicho’s movements. It proved difficult, especially as Jushiro couldn’t rely on sensory just yet. The white-haired Shinigami showed his agility by shifting his weight. And in one smooth movement his body was facing another direction, this was his attempt at tracking Kagi. His blade rose again to intercept the slash coming from another angle. Like before, Jushiro used Kisshouten’s abilities to aide him in dealing with Kagi’s strikes. The same method, his blade swung outward releasing more intense heat with the same effect. His body kept turning until he was able to knock down the remaining thin streams of orange coloured light used to attack.

That is what he did right? In the moments that Kagi attacked Jushiro, the masked one frantically tried to block and evade. His agility and nimbleness were on show for Kagi to see. He had one job and that was intercept all these streams of orange light invading his space. It was mission accomplished. Again, that is what he did, right? Meanwhile, the hollows gathered up and began the next phase of their assault. Beams of red energy, all too familiar to Jushiro crashed into the building. The explosive power of the Cero blasts caused even more drama for The Masked One. Drip, drip, drip. He couldn’t yet focus on just what was dripping, he needed to hold his nerve. He had Kagi to deal with and folks from a building soon to be destroyed. Oh boy. “Roppo Fujin” he uttered while his free hand manifested a green glow in the shape of three diamonds stacked atop of each other. Immediately afterwards he vanished from sight, before appearing closer to the gaping hole in the burning building which towered above him.

A green square shaped structure appeared down below the hole where humans started falling through. The structure looked like an open box, but before the first person could completely fall in, Jushiro uttered a few more words. “Bakudo 37, Tsuriboshi”. A blue light formed inside the green square shaped structure before six ropes fired outwards from the blue light. The ropes used the inside of the square shaped structure as an anchor. The energy in the centre solidifies into a flat elastic-like cushion. The primary aim of which was to catch the people falling. Inside this green square is where Jushiro found himself, in a corner, below the canopy of the flat elastic like cushion.

Jushiro had to manipulate the original shape of the green structure to suit his needs. A feat he was quite accomplished at performing when it comes to using Kido. His control over his Reiryoku and capabilities as a Kido master made for some interesting Kido presentation. He couldn’t save everyone; he could only save some people. By this point his Zanpakuto’s temperature had adjusted itself to the point where one could no longer feel the heat radiating from it. Once he was able to save those that he could, the green square shaped structured would be sealed off. This would make it so that falling debris could not harm the people inside. Nor would the building toppling over could breach it. Jushiro’s adrenaline was pumping, he could feel the sudden rush. The excitement is perhaps why he didn’t pay attention to the liquid which trickled down his various parts of his body. Drip, drip, drip. “Hmm?”. He had known about it for some time now but could not completely focus on it. Blood had been spilled and said blood belong to Jushiro. Left shoulder, a diagonal wound across his back and another across his chest. The Masked One was certain that he’d successfully blocked all Kagi’s attacks from before. So why was he wounded? Kagi Taicho was showing himself to be crafty. This is why Jushiro needed to create a barrier, one where he could protect some people and take a quick breather to assess the situation.

The top layer of the skyscraper crashed down below, but fortunately for Jushiro, he managed to vacate the area. And in doing so save himself from being crushed. It wasn’t easy to break through the barrier from the outside. Jushiro made sure to choose a corner to stand in which gave him the perfect vantage point. What was going to be Jushiro’s next move after this? He hasn’t forgotten about the hollows and Kagi was now a problem too. One thing was for certain, Jushiro's next move would take things up a notch.

"So this is that room they've mentioned."
The man's voice echoes throughout the room, entering before the man himself has step foot inside. Itaku folds his arms while gazing around a bit, shifting and turning to study his surroundings. For a moment he had forgotten why he was even there, to him the whole testing process was irrelevant and truth be told, he'd preferred not do it at all. Unfortunately the choice was not currently his.
"Anyways...how did they say this thing worked again?"
He was testing the latest prospect for their worthiness of Captaincy. He was honestly half listening when they were giving him the instructions regarding the simulation room, disinterest at this whole ordeal tugging at his consciousness. His brow furrowed as he delved into brief thought. He was testing this guy for....11th was it? An environment that would give him the most out of it, help him in dealing with a troublesome task for a potentially equally troublesome per-

'Ahhh. When it comes to troublesome, I know just the place.'
He came to a realization, a sly smirk playing on his lips. As if coming to the realization at the same time the room began to distort itself, morphing to reflect the very image that came to the Captain's mind.

15567175_xl.webp

A place foreign to everyone save for Itaku himself, multiple stair cases arose, many at irregular and seemingly impossible angles and places, each one leading to a set of sliding doors. Many shadows of various types can briefly be seen reflected on the paper doors surfaces before disappearing. The path, this place, this world went on for what seemed eternity, and within it, Itaku himself was hard to spot.

Then at a distance, passing atop the ceiling was the briefest of glimpses of the hem of his Captain's haori passing behind a closing door.

"Yes, I think this will do well."

Date

Walking down a long hallway leading to the Simulation Room is Taro Date, the next candidate for Captaincy. Accompanying him is a woman from Twelfth Division who is going over basic safety guidelines for fighting within the Simulation Room. She prattles on and on and looks to Taro to see if he is listening to her only to ever see an ever present smile and squinted eyes looking forward. She assumed he was listening and also mentally preparing for the battle ahead. She flipped up a few pages on her clipboard before continuing on with her speech.

”And finally your proctor will be Captain of the Fourth Division, Itaku Ohei. Did you get all that, Date-san?”

”Hmm? You were talking to me that whole time? You bugs sure do love clamoring for attention down there.”

”Bugs!? Everything I was telling you was for your safety and benefit! You barbarians are-”

The woman is then briefly hit by Taro’s Reiatsu and glimpses the sight of a reaper. She falls backwards and breaks out into a cold sweat, her chest heaving up and down as if she couldn’t get enough air.

”You filthy stain, to think you would have the gall to raise your voice to me. Know your place, which is in the dirt with worms and maggots, you live only to be stepped on by giants like me. Now stay there and learn how to regain your sentience or die, it doesn’t matter to me.”

Taro walks off leaving the woman there who begins to notice she is having symptoms of a heart attack. More members of Twelfth Division rush down the hallway to collect her and stabilize her condition while Taro makes his way into the Simulation Room itself. He walks into the room and what he sees sends… Nothing, he continues to smile and look straight ahead, the infinite layout of stairs and rooms does nothing to warrant shock, fear, or any emotion from the man.

Taro Date

So, my proctor is to be you? Someone who looks more fit to be another man's tramp. A disgrace to the Gotei in both performance and existence.”

He begins walking down a set of stairs, from his perspective he is walking down but for all he knows he could be walking sideways, upside down, or any direction really. He doesn’t ponder his orientation because it doesn’t matter considering in a fight an opponent can appear and strike from any direction as it is.

”To be tested and judged by a filthy half breed, a thing born from the fouled womb of the Vizard harlot. You should have killed yourself the moment you regained consciousness and realized what you are.”

This man was not speaking to taunt, no, he was speaking from a place of anger. He genuinely doesn’t like Itaku due to him being a Captain and allowing the Gotei to fall so far and for being a Vizard. He stops on the roof of a building and there he remains, using his Reikaku to try and sense out the “half breed” as he called him. His brow furrows, a vein bulges from his head as his eyes open just enough to see a glimmer of green.

”And once you meet with an accidental death in this room I’ll be sure to go and kill the other two obscenities as well. The Gotei and Seireitei have no room for monsters.”

That last sentence would be an ironic choice of words for Taro considering he himself, is a monster.

"Now now. Jealousy and glib wont award you any points here Date-san."
As Taro takes to the flight of stairs, in his perception he is descending the steps, but perspective is a funny thing. From another perspective he is walking horizontally. It is a possibility that doesn't seem to faze the Captain prospect in the slightest, who continues along his path unperturbed. Itaku's voice comes from no particular direction, its distance from Taro himself impossible to ascertain. Could the Date even hear Itaku in that moment?
”To be tested and judged by a filthy half breed, a thing born from the fouled womb of the Vizard harlot. You should have killed yourself the moment you regained consciousness and realized what you are.”

This time, the Captain remains silent. Had Taro's words gotten to him? Poked at a sensitive point, revealed a kink in the mask and armor that the Charmer wore at all times? It would seem so, on the surface at least. It was hardly anything to be ashamed of, after all, the incident was undoubtedly still very fresh for the young Captain.

”And once you meet with an accidental death in this room I’ll be sure to go and kill the other two obscenities as well. The Gotei and Seireitei have no room for monsters.”

As he completes his final statement one of the countless doors rushes open. From one perspective Taro's specifically this door is situated beside him while from another perspective the door that's opened is from above. With the opening of the door comes the outstretched body of a Gillian. Like the human toy, a jack-in-the-box the massive Gillian is propelled towards Taro with its massive maw open, teeth clamping down like a bear trap around the area Taro occupied.

"My, my quite the sharp tongue you have. I can't tell if you're here to use that or your blade there Date-san."

Again, Itaku's voice comes out and yet again its direction and distance is imperceptible. What may have also gone unnoticed is the cracking of another door, this one appears perpendicular to the foul mouthed Date, yet its from underneath that the yellow rope blossoms, underneath and behind him. The binding moves to snake around the man from below and behind him, snapping tautly around his body just as the hollow's jaws were set to do the same.

With the revelation of the Gillian behind one door it becomes more certain that each of these countless doors may hide their own individual dangers and risks along with the lurking Vizard Captain. It is in such an environment that the testee would be able to prove his strength, his might to overcome any variable, any threat, any enemy he and his division are to be faced with.

'Don't you worry. Even should you die here, I'll fix you up right as rain. I wonder if your strong feelings towards me will lead you to cut your own throat from being saved and spared by one such as I.'

Around a corner Itaku muses to himself quietly, a smirk tracing his lips as he suppresses a giggle.

'Now wouldn't THAT be something to see?'

Taro continued to try and sense out the half breed after speaking and it was this moment multiple doors flung open. A Gillian of all things is what greets him and he greets it with a smile in return. Already using his ability to sense spiritual energy he was able to catch the signature of the Kido spell below and behind him which makes him do something most would consider insane, jumping up right into the mouth of the Gillian. Its mouth would clamp down which would in turn block the Kido spell from ensnaring him, maybe the rope would even wrap itself around the Hollow’s head to prevent him from opening it again, but this wouldn’t be an issue in the slightest. Taro makes use of the Senmaioroshi (千枚卸, Thousand-Page Wholesale) technique from within the maw of the Gillian. Its head and possibly the Bakudo are simultaneously turned to shreds. With a smile on his face Taro falls back to the building he was standing on, the veins in his right arm, which holds his blade, begin to bulge as his Zanpakuto begins to take on a golden glow.

”Zangerin”
(斬華輪, Cutting Flower Ring; Viz "Slicing Flower Ring")

Blade Dance

He only speaks the name of the Hado spell, forsaking not only the incantation but the Kido type and number as well. This man has mastered the art of Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, Incantation Abandonment; Viz "Destruction Chant") to the point of being able to do this while bolstering the spell with his Reiryoku just enough for there to be no power drop off. Not only that but he demonstrates his Zanjutsu skills as well by using Hōzan Kenbu (崩山剣舞, Fallen-Mount Sword Dance; Viz "Crumbling Mountain Sword Dance") in tandem with it. Arcs of golden Kido energy lash out from the blade at all angles while crashing into all the structures around him, turning them into debris. Everything above him and 360 degrees around him was hit by Zangerin and turned to rubble but he was not finished as he halted the Zanjutsu technique and raised his left arm into the air.

”Daichi Ten'yō”
(大地転踊, Upturned Earth Dance; Viz "Ground Swell Dance")

The falling debris comes to an abrupt halt and with a snap of his fingers it all shoots outward to damage and destroy structures that are even further out and away from him. He lowers his hand and looks around at the destruction he caused, still taking note and being fully aware that the building he is on could spring a trap on him at any second along with anything below him as well.

”Of course this half-breed scum uses Hollow’s to fight for him. Is this how we test for Captaincy? Fighting and hiding in the shadows? This is why the Gotei is weak and dying now, we are letting cowards become Captain’s.”

DRIP

He rubs his chin, holding his sword at his right side in a rather relaxed fashion. Then the sound of what can only be assumed to be a droplet of water hitting wood is heard near Taro’s location. He no longer has a smile on his face but more of a neutral expression now as he scans the room once more using Reikaku.

”Hmm, this may have been a waste of time, I should have just challenged one of the current captains for their seat then transferred to Eleventh Division. Although Kurogane will probably get a bit more exercise out of things by doing it this way as well…”

DRIP

The sound of a liquid hitting wood is heard again. The Reiatsu signature of Taro’s Zanpakuto flares up for a brief moment before settling down.

”No, no, I’m not saying you need the exercise…”

He walks to the edge of the building he is on to look over the ledge. He wasn’t looking for anything in particular, just simply pacing while having a conversation with his Zanpakuto.

”I’m just saying you’ll get a chance to show off a bit more here than you would had I gone for the other method of becoming Captain.”

It is very apparent that Taro Date is not taking this seriously, already considering alternatives, already considering this to be a waste of time and most of all having idle chit chat with his Zanpakuto rather than making an actual effort to look for Itaku.

”I just wish this piece of trash would step out of the shadows and fight me already so I can get this over with. He is wasting everyone’s time with this nonsense.”

Today's candidate was quite the interesting one. Despite the peculiarity of the place he finds himself in he does not seem perturbed in the slightest. Was this confidence or arrogance? The line between the two was often incredibly thin, becoming blurred from time to time. As disorienting as this place was, Taro showed unwavering trust in his Reikaku, throwing himself not where his eyes perceived the hollow, but where his senses told him it was. An act of Suicide?

No

The mouth of the hollow that should have been his demise has become his safe haven, shielding him from the spell. A strategy not many could come up with, and one where even fewer would dare attempt.

SLLLLLLIIIIIISH

Thin lines split apart the hollow that had unwittingly sheltered the testee, the rapid sound of opening and closing drowned out while he was inside the Hollow and further still by the commotion caused by his escape. With his descent the nobleman displays his skills in both the blade and the demon arts, arcs of golden energy released in a violent flurry, making quite the mess of the beautiful albeit unusual architecture surrounding him.

Dust and debris litters the surrounding area all around the Date clansman, the sound of falling debris crashing down also notable.

SLLLLLLIIIIIISH

That sound of rapid opening and closing is there again. If it was missed before, this time it just might be caught by the curator of destruction present here. Not seeming to wish to leave things to chance, Taro uses Kido to seize the fallen debris, propelling it all outward, turning them into another weapon spreading his destructive touch even further.
”Of course this half-breed scum uses Hollow’s to fight for him. Is this how we test for Captaincy? Fighting and hiding in the shadows? This is why the Gotei is weak and dying now, we are letting cowards become Captain’s.”

CRUMBLE

Insults and disapproval are thrown and voiced. A layman may assume and perceive these words to be a provocation, a means of getting under his opponent's flesh. Perhaps if it was any other the Date had faced they may react to such words, may feel some type of way at having their fragile pride insulted. Yet, it wasn't another Captain he faced, it was Itaku and his response is...silence.

No matter, as the man didn't seem to expect any manner of response, instead engaging in conversation with his Zanpakuto.

”I just wish this piece of trash would step ou

Music's Call

A sound most peculiar interrupts the testee, it is the sound of music coming from a Biwa. As to be expected it is impossible to tell exactly where the music is coming from. More important than the music playing of course, is the detection of Kido from a distance that Taro would undoubtedly pick up on. Ready to intercept to deal with yet another attack from the shadows, instead Taro finds himself displaced. Instead of destruction surrounding him in the wake of his previous display of kido and zanjutsu there is once more stairs and sliding doors.

The shift was both sudden and unexpected. Had it repaired itself? No, the placement of things around him was different from before and at a distance one can partially see the destruction wrought by his hand earlier. Thoughts that will have to be mulled over later, what took priority instead was the thin red beam moments from piercing him through the skull, and not just his skull but apparently through his back and chest as well given what appeared to be a second similar beam moving to pierce him as well, the two moments from punching through the Captain hopeful.

If he had indeed been shifted, then it would seem that this spell had been fired and Taro was then the structure of the place was moved in such a way to shift and position the man in the cross hair's of the attack. All the while the sound of the Biwa was growing stronger as the music begin to crescendo.

"You are quite the talkative man Date-kun."

For the first time in a while was Itaku's voice, talking at the man rather to him. It was a wonder if he could even be heard above the sound of the Biwa. In his hand was a sword, its blade a deep obsidian. The blade seemed to dangle sparse violet light twinkling here and there above it. That same twinkling was taking place in quite a few other places surrounding Taro as well. Itaku was sitting along the edge of a flooring, staring at a Taro who from his perspective was standing sideways. The distance between the two nearly thirty meters. This was certainly the real Itaku, the reiatsu that could be felt from him was no doubt the genuine article.

Had he come to finally face Taro up front as he had desired, or was the Captain scheming something else?

Despite how vocal Taro is he is quick to silence himself upon hearing the strum of a Biwa. It was like a call to attention the way it grabbed him and that very same attention slowly shifted to the space around him, his destruction seemingly undone or rather was he displaced elsewhere in this maze-esque simulation? He was quickly growing tired of these games and the need to feel Itaku’s bones breaking in his grasp began to increase by the moment. Before his lips could part to hurl another insult his body had to make a move to defend itself from a Kido spell. His arm moves with blade in hand to intercept the beam aimed at his head, deflecting it and saving himself from an instantaneous death, however he did nothing for the second beam aimed at his back. It pierced through him with little to no effort, such is the effect of this modified Kido spell. He falls backward, shadows cast over his face hiding his reaction to the damage.

Itaku finally makes his presence known, throwing a slight jab back at Taro for his outspoken nature. Had he revealed himself because he was confident in his pincer attack? It was well founded confidence considering the Date was down on his back and currently unresponsive, even to what the half-breed was saying to him. The Captain had his focus on Taro and for valid reasons of course, however, even his well laid plans and manipulation of the terrain did little to alter Taro’s own schemes. Itaku will quickly learn that this is not a one on one battle. Three, the number of times the sound of liquid could be heard hitting the floor, inconsequential noises for most and seemingly for Itaku as well. For Taro these noises had meaning, they were an action being taken without the slightest bit of effort on his part, a silent command given to his ally.

As he lays on the floor his blade is suddenly engulfed in ink, this would be the first thing that should grab Itaku’s attention. However, this attention grabber would distract from a horror that floats behind him, threatening to engulf his upper body from behind. No, engulf is the wrong term for what it is attempting, eat or consume would be better words. What floats behind him silently is a large fish made of black ink, its mouth open and poised to swallow the Captain whole.

”Razor wire extending from your Zanpakuto, how quaint.”

Invincible Date!?

Taro taunts as he rises back to his feet as if a hole wasn’t even punched through his body. He dusts off his clothes as Kurogane takes to the offensive against Itaku as the Date makes no effort to acknowledge his wound. No mind is paid to it because Taro Date is a very durable man, shooting him once through the body is as useless as hitting a boulder with a chisel a single time, nothing is achieved or changed from the act. Most of his Reiryoku is used to fuel the physical aspects of himself allowing him to become a wall against his opponents, a wall they crash against with futile effort.

”More tricks, you scattered the wire about in hopes of ensnaring me in it to cut me to ribbons. I don’t need to read your mind to know how your simpleton of a Shikai works.”

Taro puts his title as Gihō-ki (技法 器; Technique Vessel) on display here. Merely looking at a weapon he knows how it would function, the tactics and advantages one may have with such a weapon. Though Itaku’s wires may be hard to see and sense Taro is well aware of how they function, on a physical level any ability granted to the wire via Shikai is unknown to him of course. He was also aware that this is a Shikai based on the Reiatsu he was sensing from Itaku at the moment as well, his Reikaku proving its worth yet again.

Should Itaku avoid the bite of the first fish there were two more waiting in the darkness to confront him as well. These fish, which are the size of a minivan, attack at different parts of the Captain. One makes a move to swallow his sword arm whole, seeking to consume the Zanpakuto as well while another seeks to cripple him by moving in for his leg. Taro would watch silently as an orb of ink forms from the ink already flowing around his blade, this orb grows and quickly shifts into another fish that hovers close to him. Taro stands silently, eyes closed to slits with a faint smile on his lips, it is as if he is taking a backseat while his second does battle for him.

”The world is seen with eyes.”

Or maybe not.
