Listen While You Read

An enormous blade’s edge of vibrating red screeched as it rose to the sky, its immense power reverberating within the Fourth Division, and those adjacent to it. Surely, anyone worth their salt within the Seireitei would feel the spiritual energy screaming off the forbidden spell; Shinigami from all over the Seireitei stopped what they were doing, their full spiritual attention commandeered, many coming out of their Division buildings to look upon whatever had caused it. When the crimson edge dissipated, and its singing power diminished, all that accompanied the colorless, rising smoke cloud was an unforgettable stillness.

On the precipice of new beginnings, the cursor of history slid ever closer to the edge of an eerie quietness; it was a silence layered in three parts.

The first layer was one that played its empty tune to the physical senses. If one were to look up at the shaded sky, an already gloomy overcast would have seemed to have gotten darker, and stiller, as the clouds remained in place as if holding their breath. If one were to listen, they would find emptiness in the wake of the once sweet whispers of the wind. If one were to reach out to touch the world, all they would feel is a numbness beyond the pale.

The first of three.

The second layer was one that spoke its hollow words to the spiritual senses. It hid behind the physical in wait for those well-enough attuned to notice it. Where once the spiritual bands of Souls glowed inharmoniously across the Soul Society, existed a blank gray that spread for miles and miles, to the ends of the City of Wandering Souls. Everyone, it seemed, ceased to exist.

The second of three.

The third layer was one that existed on a plane beyond the conventional. A quietness so deafening, so overbearing, so empty, that its presence could only be perceived by those who, when confronted by a world devoid of stimulus, could completely relinquish their bodies, minds, and souls to absolute nothingness. Only then would they realize that time had stopped.

The third of three.

This was a rare brief lapse in time, a serene moment of quiet that preceded a storm not seen, and yet brewing for centuries. What seemed like an eternal silence came to a thundering halt as the world returned to color, waves of technicolor reverberating throughout the Soul Society like layers of film, and those who lived and breathed within it. The entirety of the Seireitei, and the Wandering City, trembled as the spiritual power of unburdened Souls twisted around one another in a battle of Reiatsu.

Listen While You Read

An enormous explosion of purple, larger than the Ittō Kasō that came before, erupted at Sōkyoku Hill; even those not initiated in Reikaku would sense the Captain Commander’s roaring Reiatsu, and in opposition, the equally magnificent spiritual pressure of the Captain of the Ninth, Hitoshi Shihaimono.

In the Northwestern Quadrant, the Reiatsu of the deadly Captain of the Second, Nobu Tsunayashiro, and that of the esteemed Captain of the Fourth, Sachiko Kuchiki, would be sensed at the ready to strike one another down.

In the Southeastern Quadrant, Captain Arisu Nakazawa’s radiant spiritual pressure could be felt clashing with that of the passionate Captain Kusumoto’s.

Lastly, within the First District of the Northern Rukongai, one Souls spiritual pressure could be felt across the entirety of the Soul Society, reaching out even beyond the known Districts, and drowning out all others; it was a spiritual signature so demonic, so filled with killing intent, that the blood of his future victims would be tasted upon the tongues of all; such a signature belonged to the Kenpachi, Kenta Murakami. Alongside him were two, that of the Twelfth’s Captain, Hatsumei Takaki, and that of the Sixth’s Captain, Etsuko Nakajima, the latter of which faded quickly…

With the Soul Society under siege by an immutable song, it was a miracle that the words that would soon ring within the minds of every Shinigami would be heard nonetheless. Those of a Kidō background would recognize the sensation belonging to Bakudō #77. Tenteikūra (天挺空羅, Heavenly Rickshaws in Silken Air), coursing with the spiritual signature of the First’s Third Seat. Her voice spoke clear as day, filled with shock and anger.

143afe1f902b64791c04d44cff048d06.png

“This is an emergency broadcast! This is Third Seat Takenaka!

The Seireitei is under attack! I repeat, the Seireitei is under attack!

A group of Captains, led by the traitor Hitoshi Shihaimono, have declared war against the Gotei 13! The Captains of the Fourth, Eighth, and Eleventh have joined the Betrayer’s cause!

The Captain Commander’s order is that the members of these rebel Divisions stand-down; those that follow the Commander’s orders shall be pardoned for such treason; those that defy his orders, he will personally execute!

All other Divisions are to infiltrate the Divisions of the rebels, and arrest all who do not denounce their treasonous Captains; those who resist are to be eliminated!

I repeat! Those who resist are to be eliminated!“

And like that, her voice was gone, leaving the denizens of the Seireitei to decide their course of action; a crossroads had presented itself to each Shinigami, a choice that would change the course of both their lives, and that of the history of the Soul Society.

Yet, there were a handful of Shinigami who would receive an additional message, as the respective hell butterflies fluttered to land on their shoulders…

Hachiko Goseikanjo

Captain Kuchiki’s voice…

“My dear Hachikō. I’m sorry that this information had to reach you in this way, but forgive me; Captain Shihaimono pleaded that I keep our plans away from all, even my most trusted.

What you’ve just heard is true. Captain Shihaimono leads us in rebellion against the Captain Commander, and the Central Forty-Six. The Soul Society has suffered too long, and our patience has run thin. Kō, my love, I plead to you: believe in Captain Shihaimono’s cause, and help us see it through.

My blade has crossed with Captain Tsunayashiro’s; I do not know if I will see you again…

…find me.”

Fuyuko Munetoshi

Captain Shihaimono’s voice…

“Vice-Captain Munetoshi, listen to my words; let them ignite the fire within your heart.

As you did with me, and I before you; we as the Ninth, have pledged to protect the Seireitei from its enemies, both foreign and domestic. The Gotei 13 is a shadow of itself, filled with rot that has been festering for too long; if left untreated, the disease will eat away at us all.

That is why we must defend it against itself. It is time to cut out the cancerous tumor, and allow the Soul Society to heal.

I kept my plan away for you, to protect you; I see now that it was a mistake. I hope you can forgive me.

Now, protect the Division from anyone who would seek to do it harm.”

Shin’eki Uemura

Third Seat Akinawa’s voice…

“Rusty! HELLO?! The Captain’s vanished and Vice-Captain Tsunyashiro just got woken up by that transmission! He’s PISSED! Where the hell are you?! Hurry up and get here before the Vice-Captain loses his shit!”

Prelude to Decisiveness

With his mind honed to a razor sharp focus Otokogi strolls along, walking through villages where people step out of his way but do not fully retreat into their dwellings. They see a man who is upset and frustrated, just like them, and yet they feel that his wrath is not, and would not, be aimed their way. The sight of the Western Gate comes into view on the horizon and just as it does an old friend arrives, placing himself in his path. The man before him isn’t particularly someone who would stop Oto from doing what he is about to do, he would more than likely join him. For the Hero of Kusajishi to stand in his path it must mean he has something of great importance to tell the old man, or relay to him considering he is deafened. Hachi begins to speak but stops short when noticing the blood on his ears. Upon waving the device in front of him the old man looks intrigued, while not too fond of technology he knows what the device is just by looking at it. The knowledge he then gains from reading Hachi’s lips, something he is not well versed in however given the situation Hachi made it easy for him, only fuels his motives even further. While deafened he decides to speak and usually people tend to yell while in such a state but his voice remains calm and at a reasonable volume.

”They are in league with the Shiba, what part that fallen clan is playing in all this I am not sure, however, I plan to cripple them before they can do anything else.”

He pauses for a moment before speaking again, even though he was an enemy Otokogi is not one to speak lightly about the lives he has taken, it is nothing to brag about.

”I cut down the Onmitsukido Commander not too long ago. I made a promise to set things right here in the Rukongai, that means making nobility atone for their sins of greed and gluttony which the people have had to suffer for with their lives. Until things are set right I will be fighting for the Rukongai and its people, not for the Gotei. If you follow me it means-”

The Tipping Point!

Otokogi stops speaking as his senses pick up on the Captain Commander’s Reiatsu, more than just sensing it he can see it as it rises into the sky. Along with it the Captain of the Ninth, Hitoshi Shihaimono’s Reiatsu climbs with it. He is utterly confused and baffled by what he is sensing, his hands clutching into fists while trying to make sense of it all. Being close to the Western Gate he could sense just north of them that Captain Kuchiki and Captain Tsunayashiro were preparing to do battle as well. What the hell was happening in the Seireitei while he was gone, or rather, what was happening beneath his very nose this entire time? As if all this wasn’t enough the Kenpachi’s Reiatsu is blanketed over it all, what the hell has spurned him to move all of a sudden? Question after question, after question rings out in his mind only for those questions to be cut shorts by the sensation of Kido reaching it, Bakudō #77. Tenteikūra. He stands by to receive the message.

A grim shadow falls over the elders face, the situation has reached a boiling point of no return and a decision needs to be made on who he shall support in this situation while also not losing sight of his true objective. In this immediate moment he makes no decision, he makes no choice, instead he motions to Hachi to follow him as he vanishes with Shunpo towards the Western Gate. Given their distance from the gate they should arrive there in no time.

Indecisive Times

Upon arriving at the gate Oto becomes witness to the stationed Shinigami beset by confusion and indecisiveness from the message they just received. Seeing the Third Division Vice-Captain arrive set their minds at ease as they looked to him for answers to the plethora of questions they have. A few of them notice the blood coming from his ears and are quick to leap into action to heal them with Kaido. After a few minutes his hearing was back, not to one hundred percent but enough for him to hear what the Shinigami were asking. It was what he expected to hear, a lot of “what do I do” or “I’m not sure what to do.” Many young souls with much life left to live may be cut down out of sheer indecisiveness and to be cut down for that reason is no way to die. During times of war Otokogi had led small teams, he focused heavily on making sure that everyone made it out alive, sadly this is a situation where he cannot do that, he cannot ensure the lives of all these men here, but he can at least give them a fighting chance. He looks past them, towards the gate then back to the Shinigami before him.

”Listen to me well. This is not a time to be unsure of your actions or motives, your conviction must be like steel. Unbending, unbreakable. I served the Third Division as the Lieutenant with my hands tied, I let the people of the Rukongai drown in sorrow for a very long time. Today my hands were finally freed and I learned much, enough to know that this conflict isn’t as simple as The Gotei versus Rebels.”

He steps forward, the Shinigami before him parting to make a path and what he now stands face to face with is a massive gate that can only be moved by its guardian.

”There is something else brewing beneath all of this and I will make sure it is stopped before more innocent lives are lost and more than that… Those who have done wrong to the citizens of the Rukongai shall atone.”

Adamantium Conviction

"Pull Down the heavens..."

The collected Shinigami begin to panic and scramble away the moment they hear those words leave his lips. The building Reiatsu was also more than enough to scare them off as well, taking cover or standing afar from the old man. Just what was he planning, did he not hear the message that came through? A new nagging question began to ring in the minds of the Shinigami, what side was he on? He begins to raise his Zanpakuto up towards the gate, the Reiatsu building within and around the blade as it contorts and twists its shape. The air crackled with power and energy as the Shikai was being released, gravity itself began to hum a unique tune.

”Jūryokuhanten."

What happens next answers the question about which side he is on, it is answered loud and clearly with his actions. The gate, which can only be lifted by the strength of a Gate Guardian, is sent flying up into the air against its will. While the nature of these Sekkiseki gates negates spiritual energy it holds no sway over the force of gravity. The airborne gate begins to tilt backwards on its descent before finally landing on the Seireitei side. snapping trees, flattening buildings and launching debris. On Otokogi's side they were spared from the debris thanks to his Reiatsu pushing it down into the ground before it was close enough to harm him or the others. Everyone is in a stunned silence by what they just witnessed, the old man slowly lowering his Zanpakuto after using its ability and then looking over his shoulder towards the men behind him.

”I will be in opposition to the Gotei Thirteen, however, I am an ally of the Rukongai. This “Rebel Army” is something I know nothing about so I cannot truly call myself their ally. But if they are fighting against this corruption then that motive alone may be enough for me...”

He begins to turn to face the men there, those of Ninth Division and of his own Third Division. He sighs heavily as he must ask them to do the unthinkable.

”Listen, we cannot be indecisive, worrying about what side is right or wrong, we must follow our own morals to decide that. I am fighting to protect the people of the Rukongai from further mistreatment, something that those of us in Third should have been doing from the start. If you choose to follow me understand that will mean-”

Treachery

The men of the Ninth Division have their orders and their own decisions to make; these words are not for them, they are for the men of the Third Division. They look to one another, scared of the choice given to them, the choice of remaining idle as they have been since their Captain became corrupted or to finally stand up and do something about it. Otokogi looks to Hachi and gives him a nod, he knows full well what his third seat will choose, inaction was never his style. The old man looks towards Central Seireitei, his brows furrowed as his goal has been set long before arriving at the gate. Before he takes a step forward someone from the Third Division speaks up, shouting orders at the others, almost as if on behalf of Otokogi.

”Listen up! Send out messages to all members of the Third Division! Let them know that we will be taking a stand against the nobility! If they get in our way we will fight! We will fight for the people of the Rukongai!”

The old man could do nothing but smile and laugh at what he was hearing behind him. This rallying cry made, not by him, but by members of his Division is something he’s been wanting to hear for so long. He knows by definition they will be lumped together with the Rebels and the loyalists won't hesitate to cut them down, despite them proclaiming their allegiance with the Rukongai. Another heavy sigh is let out by the old man as he raises his hand to call for attention.

”Aid the Rebels as you see fit, they are fighting against this corruption, same as us. But do not lose sight of why you are fighting and what you are fighting for.”

And with those final words Otokogi vanishes from sight, his targeted destination, Southwest Seireitei.

The Old Man had been rather receptive and showed not a single inkling of surprise or disdain towards the words that Hachi painted simply by moving his lips. Instead, he shared his own experience, his own information–perhaps more grueling than Hachi’s, as the Gentle Breeze was forced to revert to a being of violence in order to battle the brewing chaos.
”They are in league with the Shiba, what part that fallen clan is playing in all this I am not sure, however, I plan to cripple them before they can do anything else.”

”I cut down the Onmitsukido Commander not too long ago. Shock is painted over the entirety of Hachi’s expression. The Vice-Captain wasn’t prone to senseless violence and could talk damn near anyone off of a ledge or out of crossing blades with him. But just now, he admitted to striking down a foe, the Omnitsukido commander at that. The young shinigami’s mind reaches back into its depths, recalling Daisuke’s confession of not knowing how far this corruption had spread. If Oto’s report was correct–which Hachi had no reason to believe otherwise–then even the Omnitsukido Commander had a direct part in this. Was he one of the many masterminds involved, or just another cog in the machine? The Vice-Captain continued his monologue–his words like music, appealing to thoughts and feelings that Hachi has harbored for decades. Nobility is a stain on the Gotei 13’s image and a plague to the Soul Society. For too long have they poisoned the minds of the many shinigami graduating from Shin’O academy and bled the Rukongai dry of its loyalty, of its peace. The relishing of Otokogi-Sensei’s words was cut short, both he and Hachi were spiritually disturbed as they approached the Western Gate. Over the massive boundary of the gargantuan walls, energy reverberates and tears the sky asunder. A blade of crimson fire climbs into the sky, breaching the clouds, seemingly ripping through the atmosphere itself.

His eyes dart upward, watching as the forbidden spell is put to use, directly in the vicinity of the 4th Division barracks. The spell fades, and the crimson blade retracts into its metaphorical scabbard, surely leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. There is an empty stillness that follows, an eerie pause on all things moving that paints Soul Society in greyscale. Every heartbeat, slowed to nothing, every moving cloud, locked in place. Breath tries to creep outward and fails, the very oxygen in his lungs ceasing to circulate for an infinitesimal moment. The world was brought to its knees in this imperceptible lapse before chaos erupts throughout the Seireitei. Color is restored to the world, but the green of the trees or brown of the dirt does not become the focus. High and far in the distance, on Sokyoku Hill, a vibrant purple rises to break the threshold of the sky, flaring combatively with pressure that is felt even from this distance. The Captain Commander had been engaged in battle, their Reiatsu eclipsing even that of the Itto Kaso before it. The power was insurmountable, clashing with another signature–one that belonged to Hitoshi Shihaimono, Captain of Division 9. Beacons of color begin to erupt nearly everywhere from within the Seiretei; Captain Kuchiki and Captain Tsunayashiro, Captain Nakazawa and Captain Kusumoto. The many Captains of the Gotei 13 seemed to be at war with each other, as combative Reiatsu fills the air, bearing down on the normal unseated members of the respective divisions that will surely be innocent casualties in the crossfire. Most dangerously, however, the roaring and demonic howl that was Kenpachi Nurakami’s Reiatsu, is felt even from the near-opposite side of the Rukongai, seemingly battling with the Captains of both the 12th and 6th Division, and winning.

Suddenly, everyone’s attention is grabbed against their will, a Kido spell commonly used for the broadcasting of messages across large groups and distances, Tenteikura (天挺空羅, Heavenly Rickshaws in Silken Air), invades the mindscape of any and all.

I repeat! Those who resist are to be eliminated!

Hachi is initially frozen still, and it was clear that things had become more tumultuous than he could have imagined. It was all progressing so quickly, Soul Society plunged deeper into darkness, and back into open war. The Old Man says nothing, the broadcast overruling his lack of hearing, resounding loudly in his very head. A dark shadow overcomes the man; no words roll off of his tongue as he gestures for Hachi to follow him, which without question, he does.

The two were already extremely close to the Western Gate and therefore stumbled upon it in no time at all. Appearing from a bled visual of the two 3rd Division Shinigami utilizing Shunpo, Both Hachi and Otokogi cleared their way through the crowds of formerly rioting Rukongai citizens that were now consumed by fear due to the display of power that radiated from the Seireitei. Without receiving the broadcast, they would assume that this was probably a retaliation to their own rioting and resistance, which caused many of them to retreat back into the districts. The 9th Division and 3rd Division squadrons stationed there stand confused and bewildered. They lack the ability to choose a side and are clearly stricken with fear, afraid to choose incorrectly. Oto’ is noticed by his subordinates, and many of them flock to give him medical aid while Hachi, uninjured, stands silently in support. His face, however, wears emotion. There was never a question for him on what side he would choose, but now that the time had come to take action, he was somewhat saddened by what he would be forced to do. Flashbacks invade his memory, clouding his judgment, reaching into the darkest concealed depths of his past to draw out the monster that was shaped by the horrors of Soul Society’s noble houses. He hoped someone would be there to stop him, should he go overboard.

As the Vice-Captain’s wounds are finally tended to, he leers past the crowd and directly toward the gate, before scanning the crowd of indecisive faces once more, a triumph speech released from parting lips.

As Oto’ steps forward in the path carved before him by the sea of Shinigami, Hachi naturally follows, the both of them approaching the massive sealed gate, glaring at its magnificence.
”There is something else brewing beneath all of this and I will make sure it is stopped before more innocent lives are lost and more than that… Those who have done wrong to the citizens of the Rukongai shall atone.”

“You’re damn’ right they’re gonna atone! You be judge and jury. . .Old Man.”

Hachi pauses, turning again to face the uncertain crowd.

JT671Qeq5lnoUOxMheuwc1si-XVULeKtoftbc_Ajly2ntAXrQ-u97d-KJnEE_wMTqsdC0azyVRg5u6VTDy9z3qZfYJMZAD47kCme81MTNul4d3EqgyxL0FksdvlObtrnTertkJkxhb5ReysCXpFLHJw

“I’ll be the executioner.”

Had they not been fired up already, many of the third division at the very least would erupt in cheer and fighting vigor. Many Asauchi rose into the sky, and jeering from the shinigami stationed here would soon be heard far and wide. Behind him, however, the Vice-Captain makes his move.
"Pull Down the heavens..."

”Jūryokuhanten."

A bulk of the shinigami crowd disperses and spreads out, the moment that Otokogi’s Reiatsu begins to bolster. Hachi, however, remains still–his blade now drawn, the many energies that rose to the sky reflecting off the pristine metal in a kaleidoscope of color, as the scabbard is tucked into his obi sash. Familiar with Otokogi’s Shikai, Hachi can almost predict what would follow. The gate, ripped from its hinges by the forces of gravity, faint hums are heard ever-so-lightly as the gate crashes down onto the Seireitei side of the wall, destroying trees and buildings alike. Hachi’s stance remains stoic and unmoving, his thick locks swaying in the wind, concussed from the impact of the gate’s unhinging.
”I will be in opposition to the Gotei Thirteen, however, I am an ally of the Rukongai. This “Rebel Army” is something I know nothing about so I cannot truly call myself their ally. But if they are fighting against this corruption then that motive alone may be enough for me...”

”Listen, we cannot be indecisive, worrying about what side is right or wrong, we must follow our own morals to decide that. I am fighting to protect the people of the Rukongai from further mistreatment, something that those of us in Third should have been doing from the start. If you choose to follow me understand that will mean-”

A majority of the men and women still look indecisive, as could be expected. But the seed was planted, and it was up to them to carry out their virtues however they saw fit. Had they chosen the opposing side, neither Oto’ or Hachi would dare bear down on the ants and sheep, confident in those loyal to them to deal with any opposition to their cause.
”Listen up! Send out messages to all members of the Third Division! Let them know that we will be taking a stand against the nobility! If they get in our way we will fight! We will fight for the people of the Rukongai!”

The seed sprouts, and as both Oto’ and Hachi now find themselves with their backs turned toward the crowd, it appears that their work here was done. The Old Man nods towards the Violent Gale, who then nods in response, the two of them well aware of the situation and plan without ever having to exchange further words on the subject. They begin in a slow trot, which would become them vanishing from sight into a Shunpo the moment Oto’s final words were spoken.
”Aid the Rebels as you see fit, they are fighting against this corruption, same as us. But do not lose sight of why you are fighting and what you are fighting for.”

And just like that, they were gone, their silhouettes last seen headed in the direction of the Seireitei’s Southwestern Region.
